Glad to be gone

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006
We lived here for 2 years. The only good things that I can say is that it was cheap to move in (I think we got the first month free), and it's in a great school district and neighborhood.
During February of the 2nd year we lived there, the management decided to start controlling the heat. This was in the middle of a very cold winter. I wrote a letter asking if we could please pay our own heating bill rather than be forced to keep our thermostat at 72. My son was an infant at the time and suffered from bronchitis and ear infections. I wrote that in my letter, but it went unacknowledged. The problem with the 72 degree thermostat was that the bedrooms were much colder than the rest of the home, so they stayed around 68 degrees. However, I figured out how to override the controls on the thermostat after about 3 days of freezing temperatures. The maintenance people constantly changed them back to 72 when we weren't home, but I would just change it again. I would suggest figuring that out first thing.
Then in the summer, the apartment was sweltering. I think the main problem was the poor insulation. We had our AC checked several times, and they told us there was nothing wrong. Sometimes we had to leave from around 3 in the afternoon until about 9 at night. It was terrible - if we stayed in, we would just be sitting there sweating. At least they have a pool.
Also, we had squirrels living in our rafters. It sounds cute, but it was disgusting. You could hear them running around over your head at all hours. I worried about what would happen if they died in there! We contacted the office about this at least once per month, but no one ever came to even check it out.
There are huge spaces under the doors, so when people would smoke in the hallways during the winter months, the smoke came right under the front door into my living room and it was like living in a bar. We put towels under the door to keep the smoke out.
The noise was another problem. You can hear your neighbors walking around (even if they live below you!), their music, and everything else. The only good thing was that pretty much everyone in my building had problems with management, and then after the thermostat issues almost everyone moved out. It was quiet for a long time after that.
I would suggest against this place. Even though it is a little cheaper than other apartments in the area, it is not worth the small amount of savings to live here.
