East Ghetto

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2007
I lived at East Ghetto for three years, because we were new to the area, we were only planning on living in Fairfax for about two years, and we were saving money to buy a home when we moved. The first year we lived there was probably the best, the only utilities that we paid was electric and the rent was reasonable for the area and we they provided a home alarm. I liked the neighborhood (Greenbriar) and we were within walking distance to grocery and other staples. Our only complaint was the noise (it sounded like the people above us lived in our apartment), the "gym" was a joke, and the swimming pool was never open during the summer because they didn't always have a lifeguard. The next year they jacked up are rent and required us to pay for water and garbage removal (a community dumpster with rats living under it). The apartments are very old and I don't think have been up dated in many years. And no new amenities were added for the large increase in rent. And in addition the changed the thermostats so you could turn the heat above 72 degrees, which meant 62 degrees in the bedrooms.
Shortly after begrudgingly signing our lease for a third term in which there was another large rent increase and we became responsible for our own gas bill. There was a large rain storm during July that flooded our apartment. It was about 8pm in the evening when the rain began rapidly entering our apartment, we phoned the management company whom seem a maintanance man over around 10pm with a Shop-vac. We he realized that the water was going to continue to come he left and said that he would be back. It wasn't until the next afternoon, the manager came to view the damage. Mind you, I was staying with a neighbor, all of my furniture was on blocks and there was not one area not affected (and it was about 90 degrees out). There solution was to put 2 fans in my apartment and shop-vac the carpets. The rain came again the next day and flooded the apartment again. Me crying ask them to put us up in another apartment and they said too bad, that my apartment was perfectly livable!!! (There was mold growing on the walls, there was an inch of water throughout and the wooden floors under the carpet were warped on top of the smell! But I concerned for me health and welfare phoned the health department to ask about the mold and they sent someone out to look and immediately condemned the apartment so the management had to either let me out of the lease or provide us with a new apartment, which they bedrudgingly did.
As we were about to move out and got the option to renew our lease (which we did not) there was another hefty rent hike and they were taking away the home security system!
