Dismal living at a high cost

The units seem nice until you have to live in one. The construction couldn't have been any poorer. The closet doors never stay in the little tracks, and mine rusted out due to poor air venting, coupled with their location in the bathroom. Turn the water heater as high up as it will go, or you'll never have enough hot water for even a 10 minute shower. If you have a gas fireplace, it will cost you about $5 an hour to run it. We were in a top floor unit with a loft, and the loft was consistently above 80 degrees. Great in the winter, but stifling in the summer as it got hotter and hotter. The bedroom windows and sliding glass doors are so drafty you can feel a breeze coming thru, and I couldn't get my bedroom above 65 degreees in the winter (it would fall to 55 in there at night) even though the rest of the apartment was scorching hot. Buy an electric blanket. You'll need it. Expect to have to seal the windows somehow yourself, and expect very high heating and cooling costs, as this place is a sieve. The carpets and vinyl tile (12" squares!) are as cheap as can be bought, so expect them to always look dirty.
The centrally located garbage is horrible, so expect to pile up all your garbage on your car and drive it over.
The parking is a nightmare. I was towed with a visible parking pass on the dash, and it costs $130 to get it out of impound. Don't expect any sympathy either, as I had to take the towing company to court. If you have friends over past nine, make sure you move them to the Safeway lot, as they tow.
The staff is generally nice and friendly, but make sure you read your contract and understand it, as they will relentlessly gouge you for every nickle they can legally extract. I had multiple roommates and collected money from each of them to pay the rent. A single NSF fee will cost you $350. Expect it.
The office hours suck (9-6), but expect them not to be there after 5:30. Therefore if you commute to work, you'll never get a package or anything done at the office before the weekend. We also ended up putting internal cameras up to monitor maintainence people after they helped themselves to the bar. No more problems after that.
The itty bitty washers and dryers are located in a bathroom, so expect noise, as well as no real washing capability. The closest laundromats are 7 miles in either direction.
Noise wasn't a problem for us, but we were regularly visited by our downstairs neighbor, as she heard it all. The general rule is that if you aren't on a top floor, expect noise. We heard a bunch of bug complaints from the neighbors on the lower floors, but we never saw an unusual amount up high.
The pool facility was nice, but they never cleaned the mud off the patio all summer, nor paid much attention to the lawn chairs, which require a good scrubbin.
