It's really NOT a bad place to live
From: sillymuseDate posted: 1/27/2009
Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2009
Gosh... after reading some of the reviews here, I don't know if I'm even living in the same complex as some of these folks. Having signed my lease a couple months ago to commence my 4th year here, I feel justified in saying I've been here a long time.
Management -- Has always been polite and responsive. Any problems I've had were fixed quickly. I never dealt with Cindy, but heard she was a trip and a half.
Bugs -- Rarely seen in my building/apartment. We may have a lot of clutter in our place, but we do keep it CLEAN. We also make sure bread, flour, cereal, sugar and the like are in sealable plastic containers, not just in their bags. You never know the housekeeping values of the people in the other apartments in the building, but I suspect it must be pretty decent. The couple of times we have seen bugs over the years, we've called and the management -- and had service within a few days. Someone comes out every Tuesday anyway because the buildings get treated regularly on a rotating basis; if you see a bug, they add your place to that Tuesday's list.
Value -- These are very large apartments for the price. No, don't expect bamboo floors, granite counters and cutting edge appliances. Everything is functional, a little worn, but oddly comfortable. The buildings are old, and they show wear, but they are eminently livable and management appears to have ongoing modernization efforts. I've noticed the sliding glass doors are being replaced with nice "real" doors, and FiOS cable was put in earlier this year.
Metro -- Vienna station is within walking distance, although it takes me a good 35 to 40 minutes to do it. The CUE bus and Metro bus both have two stops, one just before the stoplight to the complex, the other down the hill by the 7-Eleven and the end of the complex. Perfect for GMU students and getting to the Metro station. The bus stop near the light has a shelter, the lower one doesn't. If I had a wish for anything with the complex, it would be to please, please add a shelter at the stop by the 7-Eleven.
Grounds -- They do love their lawn and flowers :) It always looks nice and well-cared for. Winters, they could do a bit better on making sure the sidewalks are ice-free. Not so much the sidewalks that are interior to the complex, but the one in front of the complex, where one must walk from the bus stop.
Parking -- Gosh... this one torqued me tremendously and took weeks before I calmed down. We bought a used car after the office closed, brought it home, and it was towed away that night before we could get a sticker or pass for it. Ideally, yeah... we should have gotten a pass for it before we bought it... but we put signs in the window that it we'd just bought it and what apartment we lived in, it had temp tags on it, etc. C'non... a little compassion for ONE night would have been appreciated. But, I'm over it now and have no other difficulty with parking.
Neighbors -- As another reviewer mentioned, this is a tremendously diverse neighborhood. Personally, I've enjoyed it and liked meeting people from other places. Note... there are a LOT of children here and they are not always so careful about being on the driveways with their bicycles. If you move here, please be mindful. There are a lot of people who hang about the entrances, and folks who are just out taking a walk. It's rare to be outside and not see at least one or two other people around. So far, I've never had any trouble or felt harassed in any way -- I'm an older white woman, and when I go into my building, I smile and say hello to whoever is there, and even if they don't say anything much back, they always seem to respond with the same politeness and respect that I give.
