Low rents, basic apartment
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 5/1/2002
Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2002
Rent here is the lowest you'll find in Fairfax, and sometimes it shows.
Plusses:
* Perhaps the lowest rent in the county that's not in the 'hood
* Large apartments, some with hardwood floors
* Many of the units have newer appliances
* Nice-sized balconies and lots of natural light
* No major insect problems that I've seen
* Is tucked in a residential neighborhood, complete with Little League field next door
* Fairly quiet residents, neighbors are nice for the most part: mostly families or nontraditional students at NVCC or GMU
* HVAC system is such that you can switch from heat to A/C whenever you want
* Gas heat and cooking; they pay for water
* One block from Route 50/29 and three from Route 236
* Can walk to great Chinese and Mexican restaurants
* Near the bus line
* Good schools in Fairfax City
* Close to Old Town Fairfax
* Friendly management
Negatives:
* Seems that there's one handyman for the complex, which may not be enough for one of this age; might take forever for cosmetic repairs or routine maintenance (changing furnace filters, for instance)
* Probably enough mold in the vents to make a year's worth of penicillin
* Walls are VERY thin, so can hear neighbors when a wall is shared (or when they're doing something loud, like sex or screaming obscenities at the baby-daddy)
* Windows aren't well insulated
* Phone lines aren't too modern; might have problems with dial-up Internet access
* Some apartments share a huge balcony, some without dividers
* Outside of buildings is pretty shabby looking
* No amenities other than laundry room
* Laundry machines seems to forever be breaking down; no change machines
* Two of the buildings back up to the Breezeway Motel, one of the places where the county houses homeless families while they're on the waiting list for a shelter. This makes for neither friendly adults nor well-adjusted kids. They tend to dump trash, food, crayons, etc., either into the apartment's parking lot or into the 2-foot space between the motel and the fence.
* Next door to catholic high school; can forget about using Cedar Street on weekday mornings when parents are dropping off or kids are parking; the boys like to burn rubber since it's a straightaway; if windows are open, you can hear the latest HS discussions on who is sleeping with who, who just got back from the Bahamas, and who visited Planned Parenthood
* Nobody here recycles (personal peeve)
* No grocery within walking distance
* A few friends of residents have mistaken their car horns for doorbells
* City government seems not to know that rentals or lower class people exist; if you don't own or aren't caucasian, you don't count
* Has been talk of revitalizing the Rt. 50/29 area, which could mean the wrecking ball for this complex
