Maintenance walks right in

When I lived there [I moved out because of this], when maintenance wanted to come in for a scheduled 'maintenance thing', I was just out of the shower, and was looking for an outfit, and I heard someone walk up the stairs. They knocked once [a quick three raps on the door], and immediately opened the door and came in. When I screamed they acted like they were doing me a favor by standing in the 'foyer', and their reason for just coming in like they did was that 'most people aren't home at 10:00 am'.
I was issued a bland apology, but said they couldn't give any assurance it wouldn't happen again, because the maintenance people have so many apartments to go to.
Also, since a lot of us that lived there traveled, when they wanted to come into our apartments, they wouldn't put notices out until the middle of the week, Tuesday, stating they were coming in on Thursday. When I asked them to give us more notice, they said they couldn't because some people forget that they'd be coming in.
But yes, it'd be a nice place if I didn't feel violated living there -- and if you don't care if your apartment is open to the staff essentially 24/7, it's a nice place.

Virginia law states maintanence can open the door so long as 1 day notice is given. The knock was courtesy, they are not obligated to knock. Any apartment you live in can do this. So you shouldn't punish a complex for state laws.
