The good and the bad

There are some good things and some bad about The Hermitage.
First, the bad:
1. Dog doo. Some people are just rude and either renters with pets aren't being warned strongly enough when they sign up that they are expected to clean up after their dogs, they aren't being warned at all or they're ignoring the rules. It seems every few months strongly-worded notices go up repeating the warnings and inviting people to report offenders.
2. Mold. I saw someone else report mold around a window. Same here. Shower mildew is easier to control.
3. Outside noise. If you're unlucky enough to live along the garage, you will be exposed to people being loud as they come and go, blaring music from their cars before a night on the town and honking horns when someone is picking up one of your neighbors.
4. Inside noise. They just don't making 'em like they used to--subfloors, that is. You can, indeed, hear your neighbors' heavy footsteps, bathroom business and other business you'd rather not know about. Asking people to be more quiet has usually only resulted in a week's peace. Of course, those oblivious noisy neighbors are probably the same people shouting in the parking lot and leaving their dogs' poop everywhere.
5. Drafty. Why does the smallest apartment I've ever lived in cost more to heat than anywhere I've ever lived' The drafts coming around the front door are probably part of it and the window mold has me thinking those aren't sealed properly either.
6. Snow and ice. It's true, they've never done a quite adequate job with that. Sidewalks and stairways are routinely left covered, and if it snows more after they have plowed a parking lot, don't expect them to come back through the next day. Keep a shovel and rock salt in your car.
7. The workout room. The equipment is new and that is nice. However, they could have selected weight machines that give a person more variety. The old ones did. And the one leg machine in the room kept breaking and finally stayed broken for 9 months (not kidding) before it was fixed recently--and now it's broken again. It's a dud.
The good:
1. I've always found the leasing office staff to be friendly and nice. I've been nice to them the few times I've had to call and they've reciprocated.
2. Dog doo. Coming across dog feces is not good, but the office staff take it seriously and react with fliers very quickly.
3. Nice apartments. Yes, the apartments aren't sound-proofed and probably could be sealed better from drafts, but they have clearly been remodeled recently and are not bad-looking inside. I also like the closet space and storage unit on the balcony.
4. Generally speaking, even the noisy people that live here are still nice. Some are just young and sometimes a little clueless, some never learned manners but very few just don't care.
5. Prompt information. You can't stop criminals from jumping from dark places and peeping in windows, but when this has happened, they haven't covered it up. They've kept people informed.
6. Ants. Like dog poop, ants in your kitchen are not good, but I haven't seen them for a few years and everywhwere I've lived have had them in the spring. Call the leasing office and then buy some of that gel from Home Depot and they'll be gone in 2 days.
All in all, it's a decent place and if it turns out to be a less expensive alternative to somewhere more fancy, go ahead and rent at the Hermitage. But don't move here if you can't handle a few frustrations.
