I??m moving out of VA and using this site for another area, but thought I??d leave a little blurb about Oakton Park (The OP as we called it) before I go. It was fun for awhile, Mason students out and about, parties across the courtyard, then after a couple weeks the living conditions got old.

There is mold growing out of control in the corners of the walls, at first you can??t see it because they paint right before you move in. The bathrooms are old and gross, the grout is a dingy gray and the tubs are always clogged and back up so you have a bath as well as a shower. The parking is worse than downtown, you have to drive around the whole place 3 times before you can find a spot after 6pm (you can rarely get a spot at all on the weekends). The dumpsters are huge and in plain view and ALWAYS overflowing. The kitchen appliances are old and dirty, and the cabinets are so old and cheap, they??re literally falling apart and rotting in the back.

And the bugs! I had a friend in another building who said they weren??t as bad, but we had cockroaches by the millions! We complained and they sprayed for bugs, but it didn??t even skim the surface of this problem. I stopped going in to our kitchen after dark because they would be all over the counters and the ceiling. We never left food out, I swear these things must have been living off the rotting cabinets.

The apartments aren??t cable or internet ready. When Cox came they had to run wires all across the floors. If you are lucky enough to get screens, they usually have holes. And kiss your deposit goodbye because no matter how you leave the apartment after move out, they find some reason to keep it (I know this not only from personal experience, but from 3 different friends who all moved in and out around the same time as me).

If there is any way you can afford another place in Fairfax, DO IT! This hole in the wall just isn??t worth your hard earned money!

As the management company, we thought we would respond to this posting, and let the poster and you know what changes have been made to this community since this person moved out in 2005. Since then we have a new property manager, who has been working hard to resolve all resident issues. If a resident sees mold, or if we see it while we are getting an apartment ready for a new move in, we have to either replace the wall/ceiling, or have a hired contractor come out to treat and kill the mold. We have been working very hard to provide parking to our residents. We have replaced the parking stickers and we have stopped giving out temperary parking permits. This has opened up the parking lot and it is rare that we receive parking complaints from our residents now. (Visitors are welcome to park in the marked visitor parking spots.) If residents see bugs in their apartments, they just need to call the rental office and we will have the exterminator go to the apartment and treat them. They come every Wednesday, and if there is a bad infestation, we will treat the whole building as well as weekly treatments for the apartment that is infested. As for the internet and cable, the apartments are internet and cable ready. There is a connection for it in the living room. If a resident would like a hook up in another room, they would need to pay for that themselves. Finally, if the apartment is left with more that just regular wear and tear for the time frame the resident lived there, then yes, their will be charges at move out. If a person lives in the apartment for only a year, like this poster, then their should hardly be any wear and tear if the apartment is cleaned regularly, maintenance problems are called in to the office, and it is not over occupied. If you have any questions regarding the things that were written in either of these posts, please feel free to call the rental office. Thank you.
