I Enjoyed Living Here

I used the positive reviews on this website to choose Post Forest when I moved to Fairfax, VA. I wanted to give back by writing about my experience.
Overall, it was a nice place to live. There is plenty of parking in the complex. You can't always get a spot immediately outside of your apartment, but I was always able to easily find a spot with less than a five minute walk to my door.
Maintenance was great. It is easy to make maintenance requests, and the technicians are very friendly and professional.
Management is also easy to deal with. I had a minor issue with them at the beginning due to the fact that they wanted me to sign another lease since the original one we signed had a typo. I was initially not too keen on this, but it was essentially the same lease without the typo so we worked it out.
The quality of the apartment itself is fine. The interior is indeed very cheap, but it is a short term rental unit. All of the rental units in the Fairfax area that I looked at had comparable quality. It is not a luxurious apartment, but it is clean and functional. I was able to live here comfortably with no problems.
The community seems filled with nice people. I did not really get to know any of my neighbors, but they were courteous and nice to live around. The community always seemed very safe to me. I never saw any acts of vandalism or non-residents loitering around.
Overall, I would recommend Post Forest to anyone looking for an apartment in the area. I moved after only a year, but I moved primarily for location purposes. I work in downtown DC, and the commute from Post Forest was 1.5 hours each way. I now live close to the Vienna Metro Station for a more manageable commute. Had the commute not been such an issue, I would have renewed my lease.

1.5 commute by driving, or with the metro? i'm moving to the area soon and was hoping to live here, but i'd be working in downtown too and 1.5 each way is too long!

it really depends on what time you leave, i have never heard of it taking that long from here, usually it takes me 30-40 minutes with traffic. It is even quicker if you take the metro.

It does vary depending on what time you leave. I usually left my apartment around 7:30 AM on weekdays. I would leave work around 5:00 PM as well. I used the Metro to commute, and I definitely had to allot an average of 1.5 hours each way. On exceptionally good days, it would take 1 hour; on exceptionally bad days, it might take 3.
To give you an idea of the time breakdown for a commute:
- Drive to Vienna Metro parking garage (20-30 minutes in typical rush hour traffic assuming no major problems)
- Walk from parking garage to train and wait for train to depart (10 minutes)
- Ride train to Metro Center (30 minutes)
At this point, I transferred to the Red Line to go towards Union Station, which accounts for most of the additional time.
If you leave very early, you could probably cut the driving time in half. You may also be able to park closer to the station and cut the parking and walking time in half. The length of the train ride once it starts is usually a fixed constant no matter the time of day.
If you work in Arlington or very close to the Orange Line in NW DC, then 1 hour is reasonable at the peak of rush hour. For anywhere east of the Capitol, I think you need to plan for 1.5 hours at peak times.
