I am a pack rat, thank God! I saved all documents relating to our move-in and move-out. The office has repeatedly tried to cheat us out of money. The first attempt was rebuffed successfully, the second, we are still working on. I am considering seeking legal advice.
The rental management company is shady. I dare you to try to find contact information (address and telephone number) for Capital Properties Management Ltd. They also have two unresolved complaints with the BBB.
We never knew that the office staff would be so rude when we wanted to move out. We followed all procedures correctly: gave 60 days notice, reserved the elevators, changed our mailing addresses, gave forwarding addresses, and moved out on-time. As soon as we told them we were going to move out, the rental office's tone with us changed dramatically. We were treated as if we were causing them problems.
Save yourself the move-out trouble and DON'T move in!!!
This is what I wrote in May 2004:
I've lived in Fairfax towers for almost a year now and it's honestly not that great. The kitchen is the worst part. Our cabinets smell like the previous tenants smoked, so every time we open them, the stench knocks us backwards. Also, the stove is horrible. It's one of those coil burners with 3 small burners and one large one. Not great if you actually plan to cook more than one thing at a time (for example, spaghetti).
The price is high for something that is definitely not luxury. Chalk it up to living in West Falls Church, one of the most expensive places in NoVa.
The office staff are generally nice. I've never been snubbed by any of them. The concierge is always friendly. Maintenance requests are handled quickly. Our hot water heater was replaced in a matter of hours and we've had no problems since then.
I agree that this place has high electric bills. I don't waste electricity by any means, but due to the lack of insulation around the windows and the use of electric heat, your bill will be at least 80 dollars for a two bedroom apartment.
I would only recommend this place if someone wanted to stay less than a year. However, since most apartments in the DC metro area are either ridiculously expensive if you want something normal, or just plain expensive if you want something sub-par, I'm not sure that you'll find anything better.
