Met Our Needs

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2005
We stayed for 5 weeks (May-Jun 05). The staff was courteous and efficient. The apartment was modest, but comfortable and big enough for the three of us. Furniture is a bit old and worn, but livable. Pool is well maintained, lifeguards on duty when open and well secured when not open (kids can't wander into the pool). The complex has the best setup I've ever seen for BBQ'ing -- 8 grills in a common area. Playground is a bit small and good for small kids (boring for kids over 6). Weekly activities included Bingo, Sunday dounuts, bagels and juice, movie night (ususally a childrens or family movie shown on a large screen TV), splash party in the pool. I read of the negative reviews and can't agree with most. They sound to me like folks who had a negative experience and needed to gripe. Although I did hear other residence make some negative comments about maintenence, we only requested maintenece once (clogged up sink) and were quite satisfied. Maintenence responded within 1 hr and fixed the problem. Management followed up about an hour later to make sure the maintenance was done and we were happy with the work. Office staff is very nice and you have 24 hr security. Security will also help you with administrative issues after normal office hours (9am - 6pm). I was in the reception area about 7:30 one morning when a group needed to check out and get to Dulles airport. The security guard opened the office, checked them out, and they were on their way. I also received a package from UPS one day. I normally returned from work after the office was closed, but the security guard got my package out of the office for me after hours. There is plenty of parking. Metro is about a 10 min walk. Oakwood also runs a shuttle to the Metro for a few hours morning and evening. There is a small convenience store on premisise with newspapers, beer, milk, soda, snacks, bread, and sundries. I met two fellows who moved there for "temp" housing and decided to stay permanently. One has lived there for 12 years and the other for 7. I understand the rental rate can be reduced considerably on a long term lease. Not sure I'd choose to do that, but all things considered, Oakwood met our needs for temporary housing. I have no complaints.
