I am living in Oakwood for the third time now, and this is the first time I have not paid rent entirely on my own. Like any place, it has it's advantages and disadvantages. The biggest problem for me is not having a washer and dryer in my apartment. In fact, there is only one (small) laundry room on every other floor, so I have to carry all my loads of clothes along with laundry soap back and forth. The other complaint I have is that the sprinklers are used carelessly. The grass is almost always drenched (I have 2 dogs so I have to deal with 8 muddy paws several times each day, plus mud splattered pant legs) and the sprinklers often block sidewalks so you are forced to walk through them to get to the gym or even sometimes to leave your building.
Besides that it is very close to the metro (walking distance), pet friendly, has a nice gyms, great sand volleyball court & tennis courts, and many free evening activities such as yoga, aerobics, and movie nights, etc. I lived here without a car before and had no problem. They are flexible with the rents so try to negotiate a good deal if you can before moving in. This probably doesn't apply to State Employees on TDY since they set up a special direct billing deal.
