Maybe I'm just lucky because I haven't had a problem. My apartment is somewhat high up and it's beautiful. Also, I don't think it's expensive, especially for the DC metro area. You get what you pay for. I've never had a problem with the management staff or the maintenance staff. When I've had problems with the dishwasher or washer/dryer combo unit; it was fixed quickly.
My only complaint is the noise. Yes, it was summer and kids were out of school. However, parents who let their kids (under the age of 12) run the halls at all hours of the night is a bit much for me.
Yes, for a while you could smell the dead rats in the basements and twice they have sprayed the apartments for pests. I think the problem with the rodents stems from the cleanliness of some of the residents and not JUST the building being old and infested. I've seen residents throw trash out their windows and leave it on the sidewalks. Not cool folks. The kids and adults tend to rip the handles off the doors to the basement. If you want perfection, go pay for it at one of the luxury places.

A definite post by management or a friend of management.
Was in the Leasing Office today and the lies and omissions that staff were telling prospective tenants was unbelievable. However, although the prospective tenants are ignorant, ultimately they are responsible for checking on apartment conditions through various means like www.apartmentratings.com.

I am not a manager, I am a resident. Maybe you are just angry and don't like that someone else actually enjoys living here. Get over it.

I lived in that dump. I can say that I am not angry at all. I was angry that I lived there as long as I did. I was also angry that the utilities are a major racket for the Management, bottom line it's a rip off. Also, like most (3 out of 4) I found it infuriating that the Management did little to acknowledge , and fix the horrible rodent problems. No, it's not soo "Bad" to live here...compared to say some festering hole in the middle east.
