When we were looking for apartments in the area she immediate came to this website and put in a search for the top rated places that werent rent controlled (I make too much money). This was 100%. So we came, took a look, and signed our lease. I should have noticed that something was up when we had to pay an outrageous fee for a deposit. I've never had to pay a deposit when compared to my credit score. Ever. And I've lived in "Luxury Apartments" in Richmond. However, I was willing to let that slide, as I had to start my job soon and move into a place.
Things went pretty well for the first year months. Rent in on time, no problems with maintenance or the office staff. 2 months after moving in my neighbor from downstairs came up to check on me to see if something was wrong because water was pouring out of his roof. He took a look, I was fine, and nothing was leaking that I could see, so he went back down to call maintenance. 4 hours later a very nice Spanish man came and took a look at my water heater, which was the cause of the problem. The water heater was situated in such a place that I had no damage to my belongings. He informed me that someone would be by tomorrow to replace the water heater. Fine by me.
3 months after moving in we have an ice storm. Myself, as well as many others in the apartment community commute to Northern Virginia to work. At 5:30am I slipped and hurt my back. Its not as if the ice had occured over night, but rather had occured during the day time the day before. No salting or clearing of the sidewalks had happened. I didnt complain.
4 months after moving in we were informed that maintenance would be by to do their yearly inspections of the appliances and whatnot, and that it wouldnt be a big deal. On the day that they were to come into our apartment, my husband got sick with the flu. I called the office and informed them that they should not enter the apartment. Too late. They entered. The apartment was not as clean as it could have been, granted, as my husband was sick, and I was working full time. However the next day we were served with a notice informing us that we were in violation of our lease and that the apartment was not "neat and clean".
I am an ---- retentive person. This infuriated me. The notice said that they would be by in 2 weeks to do another inspection. Fine. I cleaned the place top to bottom, and made sure it smelled like lysol. They came to inspect, and brought with them a camera to take pictures. Now, I work for the gov't and have a somewhat high level security clearance, and that is a NO NO! No one enters without priol approval, and no one, at all, is to take pictures of the interior of your home. They told us that the place was not to their liking. We had a meeting with the head maintenance man who berated us like children, and the apartment manager who told us that we would be evicted if things were not set right.
We sent a letter to them that night stating that we would need in writing the stipulations of what is clean and neat, and how we were in violation of those things. We gave that letter 2 months ago... and have yet to hear back anything.
Whenever we see the apartment manager or the head maintenance man, they scowl at us... as though we had done something wrong, when all we have done is live here quietly and try to never have any problems. Lately we've been taken to getting receipts when we pay our rent so that they wont have any reason to evict us. As soon as our lease is up, we are buying a house.
