Good and Bad

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2004
I lived here for three years. Although I am sure the place has changed since I moved three years ago, my experience is probably a harbinger of what I have read in other reviews...
I moved in 2001 for my first job. I was attracted by the fact that the complex looked well maintained, had a good layout for a single renter like myself, and was priced very competitively versus other complexes in the area. It had a great location and plenty of parking, and was within 2 miles of my work at the time. I had no problems my first two years - the only major issue I had was the AC freezing once or twice. The amenities were nice - nice pool, good exercise facility.
The first two years were good and uneventful, and I happily renewed my lease.
The third year was a completely different story:
- My washer, which appeared to be 10 years old, shook so badly that it shook itself loose from the wall one day, flooding my living area. Thankfully, it was caught before any major damage was done, but the maintenance staff seemed almost indifferent when I called them. I did demand a new washer and, to their credit, they replaced it with no questions or protests.
- My toilet stopped working - the fill valve seemed to have gone bad. I called the maintenance line (the regular one, not the emergency one, since it didn't really qualify as an emergency in my book) twice with no response whatsoever. Finally, after confronting the manager in her office, the maintenance staff came by to fix it.
- The kicker: A colony of squirrels burrowed their way through my ceiling and down the wall, scratching a hole in the wall and into my apartment. The staffs response was, essentially, "Here's a trap. If one gets caught, let it out. Good luck". Despite calling for daily, it took 5 days for Critter Control to come out and take care of the problem - and the office did not respond to any of my calls to even give me an update. Since the squirrels were coming out of my bathroom, I had no bathroom to use for nearly a week - so I had to rely on the bathroom in the exercise facility which (thankfully) had a bath.
The complex really seemed to go downhill in the last year, and based on other reviews it appears to have gotten worse. The complex seemed to cater more towards short-term renters in my last year, and I noticed a large number of families with 5 people living in one-bedroom apartments with no furniture. Not a good sign in my book.
It is really sad because, given its location, this could be a very nice apartment complex. It seems to have been sold and transferred hands so many times in the past 4-5 years that no one seems to have cared for it properly.
