Considerations When Deciding if the Hamptons will be your new "Home"

I have lived at this community for almost a year now and, for the most part, I've had a very positive experience living here. The apartments are spacious and well-built. The landscaping within the community is exceptional, and the amenities (fitness center, movie theatre, pool) are a nice added touch that swayed me into calling the Hamptons "home." The management is very approachable and willing to help correct any problems or misunderstandings that may arise. I also appreciate the fact that the community is gated, which adds an extra safety feature to living here. While I do not have any negative comments about the community, I will provide some points for consideration should you be thinking about moving to Glen Allen and renting at this community:

a) The community is quiet, but definitely not social - If you are looking for a serene, quiet place to come home to at the end of the day, this is it! On the other hand, if you are looking for a place where residents have more of an "open door" policy, this is probably not for you. I rarely, if ever, see any of my neighbors. While demographically the community is quite mixed, I would venture to say that it is more ideal for those 40 and up. If you are a young professional right out of college who values social interactions with your neighbors, this probably isn't the place for you. On the other hand, if having adequate "personal time" is very important in your life, then the Hamptons is a great fit.

b) The community is close to the "action" in RIC, but certainly not in the middle of it all - If you are looking for somewhere that would put you in walking distance of cafes, bars, shops, etc., then I would not reccomend this community. While Short Pump is only a 10 minute drive, getting downtown will take you a good 25-30 min on the Interstate. I-295 is right next to the community, which helps. Nonetheless, it is still a drive to get around town. Thus, if you are moving to Richmond from a much larger city where walking or taking the subway is "the norm" (ie Manhatten, DC, etc), I would recommend you look closer to downtown, as you will probably find the type of amenities that are more to your suiting.

c) Management is young, but good - The ladies that "run the show" are very professional and friendly. It doesn't hurt that they are easy on the eyes too. As of now, I believe there are currently (3) ladies that work in the main office, and I would venture that they are all under the age of 30. A fresh, young perspective is great, but I don't get the impression that they have lots of experience with managing apartment communities. So, if you want a "seasoned" perspective, you probably won't get that here. Despite their youthful appearances, they do a good job!

d) Shop Around - I think this is perhaps the most useful advice to give any prospective tenant. My move to the Richmond area was somewhat rushed, so I was in a hurry to find a place to call "home." While I was pleased to stumble upon this community, I don't have enough information to know whether or not "The Price is Right." The only way to really know that is to do your research. However, I will say that I highly doubt that there are other communities that offer the same level of comfort and satisifaction for any lower rental price.

All in all, living at the Hamptons is an enjoyable experience. The comments provided above are intended to provide you with the "extra info" for consideration that you are not likely to find on the website or in a brochure. Hope this is helpful!
