I moved here in April, and my complaints have been minimal. The lighting is bad at night, I walk my dog late and I have to carry a flashlight or use the light from my phone in certain areas. They try to keep the place clean, but you can certainly tell when maintenance isn't there. My dog finds chicken bones every time I walk her. The staff at the leasing office was very nice when I moved in, but I've called a few times for little requests, like to see if a package has arrived and they can be very rude when they claim to be busy. But overall, my apartment is nice, very spacious and clean. A few of my neighbors are complaining of roof leaks after the rain, but I haven't had any problems. My toilet handle broke a few days after I moved in, it took them maybe 4 days to get someone to look at it, and only because I wouldn't stop calling or going into the leasing office. Sometimes, when its necessary, you have to show your color to get some results!! But there's no such thing as a perfect complex, so you just do what you can, and deal with the rest.

Its dark, dirty, maintenance is reluctant to do their job, and the office staff is very rude unless they're trying to sell you something, and yet you recommend this place? If it such a hassle to get anything done, why do you recommend it?

Because its not always dirty, the staff is not always rude, and my personal complaints don't outweigh the convenience of living here. The neighbors are nice, and it's quiet around my building. And you're gonna have a hassle trying to do something wherever you go.
