This complex pulled a "bait and switch" trick on my on husband and me. It has very nice landscaping outside and is well manicured. The siding looks new. I was shown a beautiful model apartment and was told that all the appliances in the complex had been updated, so I would have all new appliances, plus new carpeting and new tiling. Three weeks later, I did a long distance U-Haul move from Washington, DC and I was not allowed to see the apartment until I signed the lease. When I got into the apartment, the first thing I noticed is the door doesn't latch. It literally is held shut by a deadbolt, otherwise it will fall open. Inside, the carpeting was dingy, ripped, worn and had fresh stains (Virginia Law requires the carpeting to be, at the least, shampooed). The appliances were not only old and falling apart, they were filthy. The floors squeak terribly, and the few days my husband I were there, we noticed a lot of preteens and teens who loitered and got into fights and bullied and yelled obscenities.
The leasing office was not very easy to deal with. We informed the assistant manager of the apartment conditions within minutes of entering the apartment for the first time and she said we could vacate immediately, otherwise there was nothing she could do until Monday (this was Saturday). When we explained that we couldn't afford to keep the U-haul all weekend, she was unsympathetic and unhelpful. We had no choice but to unload our belongings into the apartment. The employee also stated that new appliances were only available if you paid extra for them. On Sunday, we filed an offical complaint and the same assistant manager said "if you don't like, leave". Later that night, we found cockroaches in the apartment. On Monday, we notified the Military Housing Office, and a representative came out to speak with the leasing office manager. They offered us new carpeting and new appliances (if we paid extra). We declined because of the cockroaches. So they gave us the rest of the week, free rent, to keep our things there until we found a new apartment. We were fortunate enough to find a place that same day, available for move-in the very next day. But before we could move anything, we bombed the apartment for cockroaches to prevent taking them with us to the new apartment.
The rest of the apartment was absolutely disgusting... the pictures speak for themselves.
