I transfered to JMU not knowing much about the appt's. My first year i had two good roomates which helped me get oriented to the burg and find everything, ashby wasnt good about that. There is always trash laying around the buildings and if you are looking to party and dont have any morning classes then this is the place for you. One MAIN problom i had was that maintenence would just come into your apartment to do "repairs" even if you weren't home, or were in the shower and came out to find two strangers wonding around your appt. My first years bed was HORRIBLE, in fact all my roomates called and called trying to get someone up here to see them, to which they just blew us off, my bed was having wires comming through the bed going into my back, finally they replaced the bed after i kept telling them to, but the replacement bed was just as bad as the first. Parking can be hard to find and if you make a beer run on a friday or saterday night you wont find another spot in ashby half the time. Washing machine knob has been broke since last year, it falls of if pulled in the "wrong way". Noise and trash is pretty bad. Its a good deal though as for price since you only pay for gas and electric and two bus routes come to it. Also we might as well be called the ellis island of freshmen becuase they flock here in hordes on buses every weekend. As for saftey my car has been egged as well as others around mine one night by fellow ashby residents and my roomates girlfriends car window which was parked in a visitors spot one weekend night was bashed in for no reason, and fire alarms are pulled and will stay on untill the fire dept. comes to turn them off, usually lasts about 45 min to an hour, not my idea of a restfull sleep.
