It looks nice, but as they say -- you can't tell a book by its cover

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2001
We chose to live at this complex for several reasons. The most appealing was that the buildings were brand new. Also, each unit is wired for DSL, which was a big plus. We also found the layout of the 2 bedroom to be very convenient, especially when we have guests, and the kitchen is one of the better layouts I've seen in an apartment. So even though the rent was a couple hundred dollars more per month than other comparable apartment complexes in the area, we decided the benefits were worthwhile.
Boy, were we wrong. It only took a couple of days after we moved in to realize how badly constructed the place is. The shelves in our closets are crooked, the drywall is done poorly, and we can hear everything that goes on in our neighbors' apartments. Granted, this is part of apartment living, but as a grad student I lived in an apartment that looked like it was constructed out of matchbooks but it wasn't nearly as bad as this place.
Additionally, once all of the buildings were constructed and people started moving in, the parking situation has become impossible. If we get home after 9pm, even on a weekend, it is most likely that we will have to park someplace across the complex. When we moved in, we were told we would be receiving assigned parking places. In July, we asked when that would be happening, and were assured that they would be arranging something by September. Well, here it is, almost November...
Also, that great DSL hook-up we had' Well, the company with whom the complex had a contract with went out of business very soon after we moved in. They have yet to find another company to provide service. We can't even get service from DirectTV DSL.
The stairways of the apartment are disgusting. People throw their food remains on the ground and no one picks them up. People leave bags of trash next to the mailboxes or at the bottom of the stairs, and no one picks them up for days. One morning I came outside and discovered a pile of trash behind my car. I feel like they should be paying me for picking up trash, since I throw people's things away all the time. And the railings have been covered in a thick layer of dirt for many months now. A few months ago, we received a letter telling us that people would be cleaning in the stairways, and indeed there were people doing something outside for a couple of days. However, the dirt remains.
On the plus side, I guess, the several times we have had problems with things breaking, maintenance has been extremely reliable.
So although it is a nice looking apartment, and the floorplan is good, it isn't all it's cracked up to be. Fortunately we'll be moving to Boston in a couple of months. Otherwise we would probably move back to the corporate apartment we lived in when we first moved to this area which is older, but much better constructed and cared for.
