This is a complaint against Ashford Meadows Apartments
located at 2551 Cornelia Road, Herndon VA 20171. They are
part of Lincoln Apts and have Lincoln Check do their
credit checks. This incident happened during the 2 week
period of April 1st to April 15th, 2004. First, during my
first visit, the apt management told me about a $300 admin
fee that they charge (that is waived if you sign up to rent
an apt within a 24 hour period of viewing the apt), $300
security deposit, and $50 application fee. In order to avoid
the admin fee, I gave them the application form and all the
fees the next day via money order. They gave me a 2 week run
around during the application process and refused to return
my security deposit (because they have a 48 hour time limit
for refunds for the security deposit - which they didn't tell
me about). However, they never mentioned to me that the application
process that is typically supposed to take 30 mins to 2 days
max can take 2 weeks either. I had to do all the work related
to getting an final approval on my application like calling up
my previous landlords and making sure the process went through.
This is Lincoln Check's job and they were not taking any serious
effort to call and expedite the process. I gave them my passport
info, residence history for past 6 years, my job offer letter, my
past 2 pay stubs and still they kept on prolonging the process.
They would not give me my security deposit back in order for me to
look at another places and I was basically stuck. But, eventually
I had to seriously threaten them about court before they finally
agreed to give me my $300 back. I would never live in a place like
this. Currently, they have refused to give me back part of the
application fee. According to VA rental law, they are supposed
to give me back the application fee over $32. Moreso, they have
not given me a specific date of when they will return my $300 back. I am pursing this matter with the Fair Housing Office of VA and will be taking them to court, as necessary.
