My wife and I have lived at the Glen for about 15 months. We will be moving out at the end of this month because rent was raised each time we had to renew our lease. Rent is comparable to other two-bedroom apartments in the area, but, unlike the rest, the Glen is on the edge of the Leesburg "ghetto".

The apartments themselves are pretty nice. The third floor apartments have fireplaces and vaulted ceilings, and the apartments average around 900 sq. ft. of space. The walls, porches, etc. are all in decent shape. The appliances and fixtures are another matter. From the time we first moved in, the dryer never worked (it took anywhere from 3-4 full cycles to dry a single load of laundry). We told Management about this several times, and they responded by insisting that it was a result of bird nests resting in the dryer vents. They attempted to remove the supposed "birds nests" 2-3 times to no avail. Never once did they consider fixing the dryer itself or replacing it (it is probably 15-20 years old), despite our suggestions. This has been a widespread problem throughout the complex. Make sure the dryer in your unit is new.

The washer, stove and refrigerator have all worked fine. I believe they are currently renovating apartments as current tenets move out, so you may be able to find an apartment with brand new appliances. I imagine that they wanted to wait until we moved out to replace our dryer and renovate the entire apartment.

Both of our toilets and a shower head began leaking after we moved in. Maintenance was helpful in fixing these problems, but it took several days to get them fixed. The Glen appears to only employ a single maintenance worker, though, so that's not surprising.

As for the exterior: the grounds are kept pretty well and the snow is removed from the parking lot in the winter. There has also never been a problem with parking for either residents or visitors (this is commonly a problem in other apartment complexes in the area). The garbage bins are always a mess and overflowing, but this is as much the irresponsibility of the tenets as of the management. Finally, the gates have only worked for about 2 out of the 15 months we've lived here, so don't believe it if they tell you they're about to be fixed. They never stay fixed long.

My only major problem with the otherwise-friendly management and staff has been in this our final month of living here. We handed our final rent check to the staff on the 1st of the month, but we received a threatening letter on the 6th, declaring that we were in violation of our lease and had 5 days to pay our rent or legal proceedings would be initiated. When we went down to tell them that we had given them our check, they told us that they couldn't find it. We had to follow up with them several times about whether or not they had found the check. Finally, they told us that we had to contact our bank, cancel our previous check, and write them a new one. If you move into the Glen, be absolutely sure to get and keep receipts for every transaction.

Overall, life at The Glen isn't bad. It's a fairly quiet and clean complex, just be aware that it is not the safest neighborhood, make sure you keep receipts, and know that they will be hesitant to fix major problems. Also there is currently a police officer residing there that likes to snoop around investigating whether or not cars are properly tagged, licensed and in excellent condition - he is not the officer employed by the complex and he does not have permission from the property manager to examine cars on the Glen's private property.
