I recently transferred with my job to DC. I'm having a house built and moved to Haverhill for a short term lease until my house was completed.
On the 25th of the month, my 3 month old daughter passed away suddenly. My wife was staying with her parents at the time in Arizona and I flew out there that day. I did not return to Haverhill until the 9th and found a late notice for rent on my door as I would expect.
What I didn't expect was the reaction from management when I told them of my situation. I asked if there was anything that can be done to drop the late fee and was told by the employee "I understand your situation, but unfortunately the system will not allow it." First off, you don't understand my situation, my 3 month old daughter just died. Second, don't blame the "system" for showing no compassion.
Thanks for showing me that the world is filled with kind hearted folks who realize that we are human beings that have feelings and not just another check for your company to cash. Enjoy your $140 late fee. Oh, and I'll be sure to get it in a cashier's check to make your life a little easier as well.

Absolutely unforgivable! Since when does "the system" overrule human judgment (let alone some kind of compassion). That's just absolutely plain WRONG - the mark of a short-sighted staffer who likely just presumes that if you don't renew your lease they'll just get another resident to move in. So sorry for your loss.

That's a horrible horrible thing that happened to you. I'm SO very sorry for your loss. And actually, I know this company rather well, their policy is that you can excuse the late fee for anyone who has never been late before. Furthermore, providing the certificate of death would've let you void your lease with them completely. Again, I AM SO VERY sorry for you loss and for this lousy apartment complex complicating the situation even further.
