Broke my lease and left in a hurry!

I lived at the Regency for about 6 months over the summer of 2004. When I moved in the A/C didn't work (my apt was brand new)the gas fireplace had a slow leak so the apt smelled really bad and the apt had never been cleaned. There was urine in the toilets, insects everywhere and nails all over the patio. This was surely an indication I should have turned around and left. I had to wait 4 hours (in the blazing heat) for them to call the cleaning people to get all of the dirt and dead insects out, clean the bathrooms and tubs (where someone had poured beer) and fix the A/C and gas while i sat outside with a moving truck and some very angry movers. When I first drove through, the neighborhood looked pleasant. Then after I moved in, I realized...the trouble begins when the rental office closes. That's when I drove home and noticed people sitting on the hoods of thier cars drinking 40's, kids playing in the street, drug deals in the street, loud music...I was shocked. I was the first person to live in my building, so it was nice and quiet until the mexican family moved in across the hall and brought thier roaches with them. When I read the lease, I'm VERY sure it states: No sitting on the stairs to the building and no trash in the hallway. Yet, when I came home everyday there seemed to be 6 or 7 little latino's and latina's sitting on the steps that couldn't understand to get the hell out of the way when someone is trying to get by with several bags of groceries! Then It was a huge kick in the head to walk into the breezeway and get smacked in the face with the smell of rotting trash that's been sitting in the hall for hours and hours when it's 95 degrees outside. Oh, and not to mention the couple of corona boxes that greeted me everyday accumulating outside of thier door. Then, it was great when the little brats would turn the hall heater on and it was like walking into an oven when getting home. I got so pissed that I started going through the back door (into the master bedroom). I complained SOOOOOOOO many times and management never did anything. Then 2 other families moved in and, let's just say, parking was more than a "little issue." The kids would ride thier bikes in the hall (yes, the tiny little hall) and scream, wrestle and play. I asked for maintenance for weather stripping around my door to keep out thier roaches and kids voices...never happened. The last straw for me was the night of the shooting. My family was over for dinner when the man was shot behind my building. I was horrified. I've never been around anything like that before and I was too jittery to even sleep that night. I threatened legal action and they let me out of my lease and refunded my deposit. I guess they should have fixed the ice maker, mold, leaking gas, noisey neighbors, nails in the street and all of the other unsafe living conditions. Then they wouldn't have to let people break the lease.
