Not the best, not the worst, but glad I'm out...

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004

Tanglewood was my first home once I graduated from college (GMU).

Of course, any place usually seems like a Hilton compared to a college dormitory.

But it only took a year to realize that there are much better apartment communities out there.

First, the apartment itself...

I shared a 2-bedroom/1-bath with a roomate on the 2nd floor.

The unit was nothing special, but I really did not have much to complain about...although some of the appliances really needed to be replaced and some of the fixtures were inoperable upon moving in.

But bottom line, the place was liveable, and the rent was fairly cheap (you get what you pay for).

The real negatives simply lie in the atmosphere of the community itself.

It seemed all my neighbors owned dogs that would bark at all hours of the night.

I complained to management, slipped friendly (anonymous) notes to the neighbors, etc.

Things would be okay for a day or two, then the dogs would start up again.

There was also considerable activity in the parking lots very early each morning, like around 5AM.

Horns honking, doors slamming, loud voices, etc.

An inconvenience to me as I worked evenings and would try to sleep into the mid-morning.

Noise in general was an issue for me.

My neighbors tended to be loud and the common walls/ceilings/floors did little to muffle the sounds.

I'm not against neighbors being loud or throwing parties once in a while (you live in an apartment building after all...some noise is expected), but late night parties were commonplace, particularly on the 3rd floor unit above mine, which, in combination with the typical morning noise, made for many restless nights.

It was very unusual to find a parking space close to my unit since I usually returned home from work after midnight.

That fact alone wouldn't necessarily bother me, except that many of the vehicles in the lots were junk cars or trailers that never moved.

The staff in general seemed friendly enough.

However, I feel I did get fleeced when moving out...The pro-rate seemed terribly high and I think I paid double for the last month of water/sewer.

But I didn't argue since I was just anxious to move out.

Again, no major major issues, just general dissatisfaction with the community and the living environment.

My two cents.
