Do not rent here!!!

Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
I am new to the area and decided to only sign a 6 month lease in case I didn't like it, even though it is brand new. I give them an overall rating of 2 stars and here is the reason why:
First of all, I didn't think the staff was all that great. Shelly is one of the best. I was moving on a Friday and had to move from 5 hours away. I didn't get started on time and I wasn't going to be there before they closed. I didn't know anybody here, didn't have anybody to stay with, and didn't have the extra money to get a hotel room for the night (since I had to pay $1,000 at move in and I was moving in on the 27th of the month). Shelly stayed at the office until I got there an hour after they closed. What a great lady!
After I got settled in, I noticed a lot of things that needed repair. First of all, the a/c didn't work and after moving in (lived on the second floor) I was hot and it was hot in my apartment. I called maintenance and they said that it isn't an emergency and to deal with it until morning. That should've been the fist sign that the apartment was going to be an interesting adventure.
Secondly, if you are going to live here, live on the second floor and be respectful of the people below you. I live on the middle floor and I can hear everything the guy does above me. IT'S HORRIBLE! I have lived in 5 apartment complexes and I have never lived in an apartment that has paper walls. The guy walks like he's 500 lbs, even though he isn't, and my walls and ceiling light fixtures literally shake. When the guy is up at 5:30, the shaking of the ceiling fixture wakes me up! It is very annoying.
Thirdly, I am a non-smoker and the guy that lives below me is a chain smoker. I can't have my windows/patio door open without the awful stench coming into my apartment. There are many days that the smoke rises into my apartment and takes it over. I have to leave because I am allergic to smoke. Do your homework when you move into an apartment. Check out your neighbors first and even talk to them about their experiences here.
Thirdly, the parking sucks. I live in a building that has garages in a bunch of parking spots. When I get home after 8pm I am lucky to find a parking spot near by door/building. It's an annoyance and it's even worse if a neighbor has people over (obviously).
Fourthly, I will say that the maintenance staff is pretty cool and they are very timely. My only complaint is that a guy left his tools behind in my apartment after doing some maintenance work, but that could have been on purpose.
Fifth, the bedroom windows are very poorly installed. In the winter, ice accumulates around the cracks of the window where it leaks air. The windows very easily frost up, which I didn't notice right away because I keep my blinds closed in the morning. Mold has consumed my window and management won't do anything about it. I am allergic to mold and I wake up with allergy symptoms and their answer is to just use bleach and wipe off the mold. Well the mold is in every nick & cranny in the window. I can't be bleach into every nick & cranny. I finally called the management office and told them about it the second time and wanted them to make a record of it because I do not want to be charged to replace the windows because of the mold. And luckily, heat is paid for because the bedroom insulation is very crappy. I have to have my heat at 75* for me to be somewhat comfortable in my room in the winter (and I prefer to sleep in cooler temperatures and I have flannel sheets). I have friends that live in this apartment and they all say their bedrooms windows suck. Some aren't even properly constructed and the wind whistles as it blows through the windows. You can even see gaping holes between their windows and the walls. Definitely inspect the apartment with a fine tooth comb before renting here.
Overall, the community is nice, the apartments and appliances are new, and it's very appealing to a renter. However, it's poorly constructed and not worth the headache. I am leaving once my 6-month lease is up. I'm sick of the noise and the smoke.
