I moved here after living in a Newport News apartment and the difference was staggering.

Clairmont has very new buildings that surround a wooded area in the center.

It is off of US-17 but far enough away that you don't hear traffic.

A pastoral setting that is only about 10-15 minutes away from Fort Eustis where I worked.

I only rarely heard my upstairs neighbor, and only when it was dead quiet in my own apartment at the time.

If you buy a ceiling fan, they will install it for you.

A basic gym with two bikes, two ellipticals, a treadmill, and a universal weight machine is available 24/7.

Decent pool.

Pros: FULL (not stackable) washer/dryer in unit, enough parking for many guests, the staff are all very knowledgeable and helpful, the maintenance crew is there every day doing preventative tasks and respond quickly (within 2 days), beautiful woods and landscaping, flexible lease durations (including month-to-month), apartment is well insulated.

Cons: only two nail holes allowed per room--and you can't patch your own holes (they have textured walls), prorated water bill (you eventually are refunded the difference), required 60 days notice to move out (I'm used to 30), mailboxes are a little small--occasionally resulting in bent mail, no recycling program, frequent bugs due to being near the woods (mostly spiders and crickets, occasional ants).

Overall I highly recommend Clairmont if you can afford it, there are cheaper places around, but they are not as nice.
