Not too shabby

This is the first time I have lived in an apartment, so you can imagine my expectations were high. Nevertheless, I am quite happy with where I am. Even with my limited experience, there are two categories of complaints I think everybody should be aware of, ones that you will find no matter what apartment complex you live in, and ones that may be truly indicative of the management. I think a lot of the problems you hear on this web site are going to be almost anything that you can find anywhere else. Despite the problems I've had, after living here for four or five months I have the place the way I like it and I am very comfortable and will consider renewing my lease.

Office: everyone, including the maintenance staff are all very nice. My only complaint is the smell of cigarette smoke in the office, how ridiculously unprofessional! However, the manager has been helpful, and some of the associates were very nice especially when I was looking to move in and told them I had small reptile pets. They were very generous and did not make me pay a deposit or make me pay the required pet monthly fee.

Maintenance crew: they always show up the next day and seem to do a decent job.

Security: the gates didn't work for a long time, but now that they have been, I really like it and it actually helps improve the inadequate parking since it only allows people in here who absolutely should be allowed! I do like the way they ask people to turn down their radios when entering the apartment complex, although ignorant people will always ruin it.

Apartment: Keep in mind that I intentionally got one of the nonrenovated apartments because it was cheaper since I am living by myself. However, it is still a very nice place and the people before me took good care of the appliances and cabinets. I actually do have new washer and dryer and the range looks like it has barely been used.
When I moved in I was horribly disappointed with the carpet. I noticed some other people complained about the carpet as well. It was so old that when you vacuumed it there was no visible difference, and there were sections of the nap messing around corners! Not to mention that since the apartment was freshly painted there was overspray on a carpet on every single wall. I talked to the manager and she agreed immediately to replace the carpet. The only problem was trying to get a carpet crew here on the weekends, and the horrible inconvenience of not being able to completely unpack and having to pick everything up again when I got the new carpet installed. The carpet by far has been the single largest disappointment for me but it was fixed promptly.
The faucets in the kitchen and bathroom were a disappointment. I was told they would all be single handled faucets. The other problem is that the handles were in bad shape; either broken or extremely old and dirty. I replaced them myself and also had to lubricate the stems and the faucets since they squeaked very loudly. I do not think it is appropriate to allow someone to move into an apartment with broken faucet handles.
I really like having the storage area underneath the stairs going up to the upstairs apartment. The patio also has very high railings around it to keep people from easily jumping in. The closet outside on the patio is very spacious, and you'll also find plenty of storage areas with wire racks in the laundry closet and in the walk-in closets

HVAC: They are very unmaintained and I wonder how much they are costing me. The outside units have been beat up and have missing covers that leave extremely dangerous electronics exposed to weather and children. There are literally 220 V out in the open and nothing stops a child from sticking their fingers in there or something falling in and shorting out and starting a fire. I also had to clean the condensation drain in my upstairs neighbor's apartment because it was obvious it had never been cleaned. At the time it was backing up and leaking condensation into my walk-in closet.

Doors and windows: they have repainted all of the front doors since I got here and that has been a significant improvement. The only other thing I can't stand is all of the screens on the windows and doors are worthless because they have so many holes and tears in them. Admittedly, I have not submitted a work order to have them replaced, I am just sort of living with it since I don't open windows very often.

Bugs: bugs don't really bother me but I do see my fair share of crickets and spiders. No cockroaches yet!

I wish there were rules about barking dogs, cleaning up after your dogs, and accumulating trash on the patio/door.
