Like the majority of people living in the Newport News area, my husband and I am in the military. We moved into Forest Lake in May of 2006 with problems from the start. The hot water did not work and the refrigerator needed to be replaced after not even a month. The maintenance crew is terrifying to the point that I would not let them do any work in the apartment if I was home alone.
My husband received last minute transfer orders in November with a repot date of less than 1 week. At first the office told us that we would have to pay for breaking our lease even though we were in the military. After providing letters from his current and new command and the JAG they agreed that they could not chare us for breaking the lease.
On January 17th I received a bill form Forest Lake stating that we had move out fees that needed to be paid and instead of fighting them on it I paid them just to shut them up. The bill was dated 15 Dec but was not post marked until 10 Jan (way to go horrible office staff!!). Something told me that this was going to be a problem so I retained the envelope with the post mark on it to show that it was mailed almost a full month after it was dated. I paid the bill and my check cleared my bank no problem. Sure enough, just as I thought there was a problem. I received a letter in the mail from a collection agency stating that this was past due. The letter form the collection agent was dated 1 week after my check cleared my back. Forest Lake has yet to return any of my numerous messages and I am still being harassed by this collector! Forest Lake is a horrible place to live as the apartments are infested with all sorts of bugs, the appliances are old, the lakes are landfills with water in them and the office staff is completely clueless!!
