these apartments have to be the cheapest made in newport news. its sad that this is what is available right outside a military post....i know alot of military lives here. my walls get black scuffs from the littlest rubbing and the plaster on the corners of the walls is always flaking off. which means i constantly have to vaccuum because my 9 month is fascinated by the little white flakes. i can hear my neighbors through the walls pretty clearly. if i even slightly tried to easedrop i would be able to. they walk around upstairs and their floors squeak and it sounds like they are walking around in my house. my floors squeak really bad too. i mean everyone has had floors that squeak but more then one person has asked me if the person walking around upstairs was going to fall through the ceiling. and ants. they like to come through the 1/2" opening around my front door. the back door has a pretty bad gap also but the ants come from the front. the guy comes around and sprays stuff but i think its just water because i have never noticed a difference in the number of ants in the year ive been here...and the bug man has been here at least 5 times that i have actually seen him. all i can say is that it is tempting because of the price and closeness to post but dont do it. if you are military stay on post and to everyone spend the extry money and get a nicer apartment...these are terrible.

I live in river mews and have never had the kind of problems described above. Yes I had a few ants at the beginning of spring, but you have those EVERYWHERE. If you keep a clean house and spray some 3 dollar raid yourself it will clear up that problem. The picture above is NOT of river mews. They look MUCH nicer. Do you know what you get in the same price range as river mews elsewhere in Newport News? You end up in a crappy apartment in a bad part of town. Yes the apartments at river mews are old and sometimes floors squeak. The apartments had to be built in the seventies or eighties. What do you expect? These apartments are clean, pretty safe, and everyone is friendly. I haven't really had any complaints about them. If you are expecting luxury homes, DON'T MOVE HERE, but in my experience the river mews are ALOT nicer than on base housing.

to the previous response, the apartments were built in 1991. At least the townhomes were. If you get renters insurance as I did, its in your policy that they were built in 1991. And, if they were built before '78, you'd have to sign something about lead based paint. My mom is a leasing manager so I know that for a fact. I agree with the noise. You can hear every word your neighbors say even when you don't try. and the ants are bad, and I live in a townhouse that starts on the second floor, and they still come in even though I'm clean AND spray on my own.

The ants are horrible. Being clean has nothing to do with it. I never kept food out and I am a rediculous clean freak. My husband sprayed religiously inside and out and the ants always came back in. The walls do get black scuffs very easily and the place seems nice at first but after awhile you will realize that it's not that nice. I had horrible issues with the men that lived around us. Some were military and some were civilian. Anytime my husband was not outside with me I had to deal with men screaming at me and knocking at my door. And females it doesnt matter if you have a bikini on or the baggiest sweat shirt and sweat pants, the men there are disgusting! We had gunshots on more than one occassion and not to mention the spree of car break ins last halloween.

Even if the apartments were built in the 90s that still makes them almost 20 years old...If you don't want to hear neighbors, I would suggest you save up for a HOUSE, since the nature of aparments is that you are living in the same building as multiple other families. I live on the ground floor and don't have any insect problems even though we are at times messy and also have a cat.

i have lived in other townhomes and would very occasionally hear my nieghbors...nothing like this. and being military i am not going to buy a house in a place i will only live a couple years...and i dont get paid enough to afford to rent a home, especially with the prices in this area. and houses are suppose to hold up a little longer than 20 years...you need to rethink your opinions if you think 20 years is a decent lifespan for a house.
