In Oct, it will be 1yr that I've lived at University Apts. I live behind the Janaf side of the apartments on the street where the pool is. I really like these apartments and I wish the rent was cheaper. We pay $855 for rent. But maybe it could be the location of why the rent is so high. Ok, but anyway. The apartments is spacious and you get free water and gas for cooking. BBQ grills are not aloud since they are fire hazards, but if you have an electric grill then you're alright. And that's what we had and we happily grilled during the summer. Our neighbors are not loud, but we live in a bottom unit and we could hear everywhere our neighbors walked above us. There was a incident when our kitchen sink over flooded our kitchen overnight (no the sink was not running) and we awoke to a kitchen floor full of our upstair neighbors sink trash. I don't know what was wrong with our sink that caused it not to drain, but we called maintenance that day and they fixed it ASAP. I was actually there when he fixed it and it didn't take him long, but I believe it was actually an out source company they called to fix the problem since the man was not in a maintenance uniform. We also had a problem with our tub draining on several occasions. The had maintenance come right away to fix it and the last time they hired a plumber to come and fix it and we haven't had problems since. We can sit on our patio and watch our child play outside with no problems. They keep the grass cut and flowers planted outside every apartments. I only deal with the office once a month and that's when I have to drop off my rent. But besides that, they have never given us any problems. They seem nice to me. They also have cookies and candy at their office to residents and guest. The pool is nice and they also have a kiddie pool. There is always a lifeguard on duty when the pool is open. There is no cable or lights in the bed room (some buy lamps for the rooms). Cox did have to drill holes in the wall to run wire through. Did we ask the office for permission' Hell no, what for' LOL. We did not see bugs in the winter, but some in the summer. Which is ok, it's like spiders, you can kill them, but you can't stop a few from coming in. I see kids in the area playing in the day, with no problems and there is also a park by the pool. My husband has told me that he heard that the units up the street from us by the pool got rob and a few car break ins at night. But where we stay we have never had any car breaks in or robberies. We park on the street where it is well lit. There is penalty of parking in the parking lots, but I rather park on the street and plus I've seen police patrolling at night. I feel very safe and I really like these apartments. No I am not a ghetto person and I only expect nothing but nice living since I have a family to make sure they are safe. If you want ghetto apartments for a very cheap price, then try Admirals Way, there are tons of apartments off of Little Creek Rd, or lets try Ocean View where the crime and break in are high on that part of town. Yes Ocean View has cleaned up, but it's not a place where I would have my family stay. Or if you want cheap rent with small as hell rooms and hear your neighbors having sex, then try Merrimack Landing. Not to mention the year I lived there, there was a Navy wife that starved her twin babies to death while her husband was out to sea. And that apartment was right in front of the leasing office. It's a nice neighbor, cheap rent, but very very small rooms. And if you want apartments that cost the price of a mortgage, then stay at the ghent apartments in downtown norfolk. But by far, out of the 5 years that I've lived in Norfolk, VA; University Apartments are very nice and a little pricey. And if you think I am a personnel from the office, here is my myspace URL, so leave me a message if you want anymore info or pictures of the apartments. www.myspace.com/cocod4000

Domiique, I agree with everything you said. My experience at University Apartments was similar to yours. I'm glad to see somebody else give the complex a good review also. I was extremely happy living there. I'd still be living there, in fact, had I not been laid off from my job early last year and was forced to move into a smaller, less expensive place when my lease was up.
