For the benefit of future residents and those considering renting space at Tanglewood Apartments, here is a list of reasons why I vacated the property.
.) Walls and Floors: Every conversation in the adjoining apartment is audible. I know when the neighbor is on the phone, showering, watching TV, etc. The floors are also weak to the point where I don t enjoy moving freely because of the accompanying squeaks and moans from the floorboards. I can only imagine it would bother the tenants below, having to hear every move I make.
.) Bugs. Not a native of the South, I was aware of a different variety of bugs in the area, from the first day I moved in. I still can t identify what kind of insect it is, perhaps cockroaches. But they come up from the floorboards, come in through cracks in the walls, etc. Spraying does not seem to help. In a span of 80 days, the apartment was sprayed twice, according to notes at my door. One spraying occurred the day I left for a week vacation. When I returned, I could still smell the poison. I spent a day sanitizing all kitchen items and returning all cabinet and drawer items back into place. This last spraying, I was given less than 24 hours notice, so upon returning from work, I spent the night moving out all food products from cabinets, as requested. The smell lingered for days.
.) Rent. Goes up in small increments every time a lease is renewed. If you request a 6 month lease, expect a payment increase every 6 months. When I first moved in, I was paying $630/month. Now I am paying $715. Is $85 a significant increase in 3 years' You decide. The rental agreement also stipulates you must give two months notice before vacating the property. A year prior, it was only one month.
.) Policies do not appear to be enforced. Twice in the three years I ve been living here, management has tried to control parking privileges with vehicle decals. Signs stipulate that without a decal or parking pass, cars will be towed. A walk around the properties will find plenty of unauthorized cars at any given time. Parking is always a hassle. Pool privileges are also poorly enforced. I ve seen people walk from residential areas to use the Tanglewood pools.
.) Laundry room is always filthy and it a matter of chance whether the machines you use will work properly or not.
.) In 2007, management attempted to get military residents to waive their right to vacate premises without penalty if they are leaving on deployment or reassignment. This was brought to the military JAG attention and military personnel were advised not to sign, because it was clearly a violation of their rights to even request this action. Tanglewood Apartments rents to a large military population, but this incident made me realize that they do not fully support the military if it gets in the way of making money off them.
.) Comcast is the only cable provider in the area. I realize it is management right to choose what services are available to its customers, but the lack of options is disappointing. Especially when considering how poor ComCast treats its customers.
.) The final decision to leave is kind of petty, I apologize. But the neighbors I ve had in my complex has been disappointing. In all fairness, I ve had a family living in the apartment below since I ve moved in and they are good people. The other family in the first floor recently moved in and seem pleasant enough. But the neighbors next door have been rotating several times in the past couple years, and all have been suspect. I ve witnessed doors being broken, screaming, all-hours of the night partying, and other bizarre behavior. From the court appearance notices on one door, to the long absences of another, I do not know what to think of some of the neighbors I ve had. I do know when they finally vacate, or in some cases it seems, abandon their apartment, they do not leave it in good quality.
.) Which brings me to my final point. When I do vacate the property, I am curious as to the costs I will incur. I ve tried to maintain the upkeep as best I can, with clogged drains, broken toilets and weak shower. But it appears that most of the turnaround maintenance performed prior to moving in is a cursory paint over of holes and cracks. These deficiencies will reappear against the next tenant, and I am hoping I do not get the blame. The carpets have turned filthy on me. Stains appear out of nowhere, and I can t explain what happened. Did maintenance create them, could they have come up from the apartment below' I can t explain some of the spots, but I will assume I must pay for new carpeting because I can t justify their existence. I think the best thing to do is to photograph the entire apartment upon first entrance and maintain a log of deficiencies as they occur. Report to management immediately, and ask for service. This is where I went wrong.
.) Washing machines have been replaced in 2009, but the prices are the same despite the load capacity is a third of what it was.
.) Snowstorm in March 2009. Power out overnight and for most of the day. Returned around 3 p.m.; the management office shut down. Machines said the lines were busy, but a trip to the office found the office locked up. Did management abandon post in a crisis' Is that why there was two police cars parked out front'

Your comments are ridicules...here why: For your point number 1: its an APARTMENT. One building that shares multiple homes. Of course you can hear your neighbors. If you dont like it...move Point # 3: Rent will ALWAYS go up. Esp in this economy. Believe me...they are NOT MAKING A PROFIT but need to increase becuase all the vendors, painters, etc increased THIER prices so they need to keep up. Your gas, electric, food, water ALL WENT UP RECENTLY B/C OF THE ECONOMY. You didn't think rent would too? Thats just stupid. Point number 7: IT IS NOT the managments right to ONLY have Comcast. I've already asked. Others services have not come into the area yet. Managemnt has no control over that. Get your facts straight. Point number 11: A stowstorm...a crisis??? OMG thats a new one. The office was dealing with an outage too. Which means no power, no heat, no phones. I'm sure the "no school" for kids left ppl without people to watch kids, and good forbid they would want to go home, and put a blanket over themselves like the rest of you!!! The office couldnt do anything...Um...."sorry the power is out...do you want me to spoon-feed you" Wow...grow some balls. a crisis??? LOL!!!!!
