If you can't possibly afford anything else

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2005
My husband and I moved into Bayview Gardens when it was called Norport apartments back in August 2002. The apt manager was very friendly. The apt was clean when we moved in however, the appliances were smaller than in the model. The place turned out to be the most awful experience we ever had with an apt complex.
The people who live at Bayview are very poor, almost all of them. Some I don't think had cars because every day there were more and more Food Lion shopping carts all over the grounds. Our neighbors would leave their trash in the hallway which aggrevated the bug problem I will describe later. We could hear everything going on in our neighbor's apt. And people would steal our newspaper or open it up and take all the coupons and leave a heap of papers on our front step. Oh and there were always shady people hanging around at night.
First of all we had no air conditioning (or a dishwasher). We had to buy a window unit. Then, since the apt paid for our gas heating and cooking, the heat wasn't turned on until November. We spent many nights freezing. We talked to the manager about this and she told us to turn on the oven and open the oven door if we were cold.
Next there were roaches everywhere. We are very clean people and we still couldn't keep the roaches out. The roaches were huge and roach spray didn't seem to kill some of them. One day I opened a drawer to get a rolling pin out and there were about 100 baby roaches just crawling everywhere.
The laundry facilities were awful. You have to pay to use them. The dryers only half work. Once I washed a load of clothes and the water didn't drain and I had to take all the wet clothes over to the laundromat to wash them properly.
The company will try to cheat you out of your money too. We were told the security deposit was $150 (which I have the reciept for). After we signed the papers we realized that the security deposit noted on the lease was noted as $100. Our mistake, but that's an good scheme.
My husband joined the Army while we were living there. When it was time for us to move out we gave the proper notice as stated in the lease agreement. When I tried to get our deposit back (which were are entitled to per the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act) the manager told us that she didn't have follow those rules. Military beware of Bayview Gardens.
