great place to live, but it is an apartment

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2004
I've lived in this community for 3.5 years and will consider renewing for another year if they don't raise my rent by another 10% this coming year.
The parking situation has definitely improved compared to when I first moved in (aside from cars always parking in the car- wash area which has appears to be a no parking zone based on the yellow stripes). At least there are NO longer commercial vehicles and cars that had not moved in weeks. There is always a spot available for guests, you just have to be willing to walk 100ft.
Pets in the complex aren't that bad - aside from the occasional argument between pets - dogs barking/yipping at one another, or cats hissing and growling. Most peoples pets seem friendly and you can't help but smile when a little kid is petting someone's cute puppy out for a walk.
The size of the rooms is great compared to most aparments. One small bathroom is a nuisance when sharing an apartment though.
The only major complaint is in the air quality within the apartments and stairwells. It seems that they have stopped the weekly sweeping service of the stairwells. My stairwell now has all sorts of spider webs (and spiders) plus other dead critters caught in the webs and on the floor - surrounded by months worth of dust and grime. The stairwells are a community area and I thought should be maintained by the community (they used to be until a few months ago).
Also (as mentioned in many posts) the ventilation for the clothes dryer goes in to the apartment which is a trade-of. I have a nasty coating of dust and soot that has accumulated in the hole in the wall which I can't totally clean and is used to allow the plumbing for the clothes washer. If that much yucky stuff has accumulated in the wall, I'd hate to guess how much also flies around the apartment and gets stuck in the air ducts. It seems that the airducts need to be thoroughly cleaned - I doubt if they've ever been done based on peering inside some of the ducts in my bedroom - yuck. Maintenance is good at changing the air filters every 6 months, but more has to be done. I've definitely noticed a change in my allergies and breathing since living here. You can even see the mold accumalate in and arround the air ducts. Mold is a known issue with the aparments, and a resident can only do so much. Archstone really needs to go that extra step to ensure healthy air for all - especially since it is a shared air ventilation system.
But it is still a great place to live - great community support staff, great location, nice view of tress, and quiet. Thank god they don't have a huge cheesy sign out front or hanging from a building that says Leasing. This is a home for most of us - although it is just an apartment.
