Run away.

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2007

After reading all the bad experiences, I thought I should post about mine. The first year was great, and I loved living there. Unfortunately, the last 8 months pretty much negated anything good I'd have to say about the apartment itself.

Just prior to the end of my first lease, I was given my renewal with a rent increase of almost $400...and only 7month lease term. I was completely shocked at both. I worked with Deloris and got it down to something MUCH more reasonable in rent increase. However, because their corporate office did not want winter renewals, they would NOT let me do a 1 year lease, only a 7 month. But, I signed anyway. Then when that was up, they sent me a renewal with an $80 increase (but at least it was a year this time). This basically means through NO FAULT OF MY OWN, I'd have 2 rent increases in less than a year period. This is completely unacceptable in my opinion (and I've confirmed that my feelings are not unreasonable with another property manager I know). Since I was forced to have the shorter lease term than I wanted, they should NOT have forced yet another rent increase on me. It'd be different if they provided any amenities other than a pool (real amenities: gym, storage, clubhouse, garages, etc).

So, I provided notice after finding a cheaper and BIGGER apartment in Ashburn...with a ton more amenities.

I will never live in an apartment associated with Equity Apartments ever again. They don't care about the resident, they only care about EVERY nickel and dime they can get from you. For example: My lease ended 3 days prior to the end of the month, I gave notice to move out at the _end_ of the month. They charged me the prorated month to month rate for those 3 days I wasn't covered by lease. Had I realized they were going to do that, I'd have ended it on the exact day. Also, I had to figure that out on my own. I inquired about my balance and was called regarding it. However, when I returned her phone call, the manager was unavailable to take my call and she did not call back that day. This was a holiday weekend, so at that point, I wouldn't be able to resolve it until AFTER the deadline, and I'm sure they'd have charged me all of their late fees.

With respect to the staff in the office, it's changed in the last year, and NOT for the better. I stopped by the office to lodge a complaint about my new neighbors above me, and was essentially asked if I could wait a week to let them get settled in as they were just moving in. My previous neighbors, I never ever heard...I didn't even know they'd moved out until these guys moved in. That was the level of noise difference. I said something to the neighbors about their noise (the noise was not things like boxes being carried in, or unpacked/dropped/etc, just...sounded like a herd elephants running around). The noise level never changed, and I later called to complain. Nothing helped at all. This same leasing person snapped at a friend of mine who was walking my dog for me. She didn't see the ball of bags that is attached to the leash, and very rudely said "We have bags for that ya know!" to him, while my dog was still doing her business. My friend informed her that my dog is picked up after and showed her the bags.
