Tenant for 7 Years

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2006

I lived here from 2000 to 2006, just long enough to get me through both my associates and my baccalaureate degrees. I had a one bedroom apartment with balcony that faced Franklin Street. When I first moved in the tenants were mostly VCU Grad students and seniors or professionals that made a certain amount of income.

Parking is on the street if you can find it and can parallel park, oh, and as long as it wasn't street cleaning day or the Richmond marathon wasn't running down the street. The apartment is located right in Downtown Richmond, which I thought would be nice and close to everything, but as the downtown planning is not great and many businesses have pulled out to the Stonypoint/ShortPump and Chesterfield Towncenter areas, there doesn't leave much downtown. You end up having to leave downtown to really get to anything except the clubs in the Shockoe bottom/Slip areas. The aparment has old parkay floor tiles that reverberate sound down the to the tenants below. You can hear any type of clunking of shoes, a pen falling on the floor, etc. They require you to carpet at least 90% of your apartment to reduce the noise but they do not furnish the carpet. The kitchen has a little gas stove and if your trying to cook and a guest is at the sink plan to have your behinds rubbing against each other. It's pretty tight in there. The cabinets hold alot but are a dark wood color and you're not allowed to paint them. The living room is adequate but not entirely too spacious. The balcony is made of concrete and had to be reinforced while we were living there for safety reasons. No BBQing is allowed as the balcony does not protrude far enough from the building to allow this...Fire safety restrictions. The bedroom has two fairly nicely sized closets for him and her. There is an additional walk-in closet in the hall that can hold quite alot. There was only one bathroom so you had to wait in line if you had guests over. There was a small linen closet right in the bathroom which I loved because I didn't have to leave the bathroom if I needed a towel, toilet paper or anything else. The bathroom has a ceramic tub with sliding doors attached so a shower curtain wasn't needed, not unless you just wanted to hide the tub....which I did. The problem with the sliding door was keeping it clean. You had to be meticulous about cleaning between the cracks of the sliding door as to not let mildew build up. It became a tedious weekly task even with spraying shower cleaner and scrubbing the tub after each use. No space cubbord under the sink and no place to really put anthing on the sink without it falling off.

The apartment was pretty nice until about 2005 when management started letting people I was afraid to ride the elevator with in to rent. I suspected a drug dealer and had to call the police and he was having people sign in at all times of the night in and out and the noise was ridiculously insane. It was scary with all the fighting and yelling you could hear. Needless to say the person was finally evicted but not before leaving a nice healthy supply of ROACHES in his apartment which guess what....spread all over the place. We had to have have everything fumagated once a week till someone was smart enough to get a new contractor who finally got rid of the problem, but for me the damage was done and I was looking for a new place to live.

I heard from a few tenants that remained living there that the place is under new management and has been cleaned up quite nicely. For the sake of the tenants, I can only hope this to be true.
