Poor management, poor maintenance, NOT recommended

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
I moved here in July 2007, and all was somewhat well for a while. However, in December, there was a smell that started coming from the ventilation system in my apartment. We called maintenance many, many times and they not only didn't fix the problem, but they thought we were nuts. We even called the fire department and had them test for gas; there was no gas, but maintenance insisted the problem was gas and fixed some supposed "leaks" - the "fix" crippled our air conditioning! However, the problem continued and we started getting sick almost constantly, and it took calls to the Henrico County health department to get maintenance and the management to do anything, and they gave us nothing but attitude in the process. It's now June and the problem still hasn't been solved. They tried cleaning the vents, but the maintenance guy (who was clearly aggravated at us for calling him) used too much cleaner, and it made us sick!
Other than this, the apartment itself is fairly mediocre. There are plumbing issues, the kitchen is very small, and expect to get woken up very early every week by the landscaping people they hire; they are incredibly noisy and are usually here for hours. Parking is okay, but some of the newer people (who are younger, this is a 55-plus community) don't know how to park, and I now have to get dents and scratches removed from my car. In terms of safety, the community is gated, but someone crashed into the gate in November - the problem was not fixed until May! The people here love to gossip, and a few of them are racist - particularly our neighbor, who wanted us to cook for him (he already has maids for some reason, so obviously we didn't do THAT).
Maintenance and the management really take the cake, though, and we've been looking for some other place to move since January. I can't wait to get out of here - if you're 55 or older (we're both younger), do yourself a favor and DON'T LIVE HERE; this place is hazardous to your health and they won't do a thing about it.
EDIT 6/27/08: We had experts come out to the building, the mold is not the issue, but rather the horribly faulty plumbing is causing toxic sewer gas to leak into the apartment. Further, the insulation is wet, and the HVAC is improperly installed, causing it to recirculate the sewer gas smell throughout the apartment. Instead of fixing these problems, the management has chosen to ignore them. Further, this place is becoming Section 8-type housing, and it's no longer a place where you'd want to go for a walk at night.
