Consider Another Place

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2009

I moved to Richmond in the fall of 2007 to attend VCU. I went with Match Point b/c of its location (quick ride to school) and the rental rate. I have tried to be positive abt this place but ...

Community:
Undoubtedly, the WORST part of living at Match Point is that some tenants have a ghetto mentality and behave ignorantly. Now, I realize that neighbor noise comes with apartment living; however, there are some residents who take it to the extreme. There is always somebody playing loud music whether it is in their vehicle or apartment. Seriously, you can be sitting in your apartment and someone will ride by with the music blaring in his vehicle. All you will hear is BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. They have no regard for others at all. My neighbor is infamous are playing loud music with heavy bass both day and night. I have complained to the rental office staff as instructed by Richmond Police Dept but the music continue I have called the. Regional Manager with the management company to complain. In the mean time, I have resigned to purchasing ear plugs and calling the police dept (I have the non emergency number on my speed dial) on a regular basis just to sleep or study in peace.

Rental Office Staff:
The two females who are regularly in the rental office excel at incompetence. They held one of my rent checks in the office for over a month. When I went to pay the rent for the next month, I got a call telling me they couldn't accept my check b/c I had not paid for the previous month. I now skipped the middleman and pay my rent online.

Building/Maintenance:
This apartment complex was built in 1974 and as far as I can tell, no major renovations have ever been completed. Only repairs have been made. The apartments are decent for the most part but old. In my apartment, the age shows in HVAC unit (loud & noisy, makes the front door shake) and in the bathroom. Some tiles in the shower have been replaced but the whole bathroom needs an upgrade. The exhausted fan is noisy and barely does its job. My bathroom is prone to mold if I don't clean with bleach on a regular. There is a leak in ceiling that has yet to be repair properly even though the rental office is aware of the problem.

More importantly, the toilet clogged up my first night in the place and all I did was pee! It took twelve hours (yes, twelve hours) and four calls for the on call emergency maintenance man to show up. SMH. The toilet would repeatedly clog up in the months to follow. The rental staff insinuated that someone in my apt was putting toys in the toilet. (I have no kids, no kids visit my apt, and I do not any own little toy soldiers). Then one afternoon, one of the rental girls left me a voicemail telling me that I was using too much toilet paper, the maintenance had left a plunger in my bathroom (of course, I already had one and only called maintenance when I couldn' t unclog the toilet myself) and that if I called again, I would be charged a service fee of $50.00!

Bottom Line:
If you can come up with the extra $100-$200 to live in nicer apartment community elsewhere in the Richmond, then by all means --DO IT.

If you are like me and have no choice but to stay at Match Point or somewhere similar b/c of financial reasons. Here are some survival tips:
1. Learn the Richmond Police Non Emergency Number --- you will need it.
2. Invest in a good set of ear plugs to block loud music, etc.
3. Realize that some people do not think logically so there is no point in trying to reason with them. Leave it up to the professionals. ( See #1)
4. Document all conversations and keep copies of all correspondences with the rental office.
5. Pay your rent online.
6. Use your experiences with this apt community to keep you motivate to strive for something better.
