Nice to look at, but terrible in every other way...

I was seduced into renting here by the shiny prettiness of the apartments, but soon after moving in realized that I'd found myself in apartment hell. In the few months I lived there, I made more maintenance calls than in my previous decade as a renter combined! And in doing so, I found out what the previous poster noted - that the staff (leasing, management, and maintenance) are *totally incompetent.* In fact, at one point one of the few competent people noted to me that she 'wasn't surprised' that none of her co-workers would 'own up to' taking (and then losing!) my rent check. Be prepared to feel like any request you make is going into a giant void from which it will never return. Also, don't even bother to try going to either office in person - either it will be locked or you will be left waiting so long that you will leave in frustration.
Finally, the noise in my apartment was completely unbearable. In addition to the construction and the trains, I could hear *every single thing* my upstairs neighbors did - walking, flushing the toilet, entering/leaving their apartment. I was later told that the floors were laid incorrectly, and even though they couldn't fix them until the upstairs tenants moved out, I would have to pay the company for the privilege of switching units to get away from the incessant noise. I decided to move out instead, and have not regretted that decision at all.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that the neighborhood (and thus your apartment if you open the windows) smells like a sewer occasionally at night. A fitting symbol for my entire experience at the River Lofts!

It's a shame, really. We alomst rented there, but read some reviews and got the general sense that the management wasn't capable of managing a large block of apartments properly. It's such a pretty area and could be a cool place to live. For Forest City to be aware of the issues, and not care about making improvements, it says a lot about how the buildings will continue to be managed.
