Snobby management, bizzare rules

We have recently scheduled an appointment to see apartments at this property. First of all, the guy who appears to be the manager didn't even want to talk to us - "sit and wait for an agent." No courtesy, no manners. We later saw him talk to a young --------American fellow who just stepped in to inquire about an apartment - the manager nearly ordered him out.
Next, the agent came and started showing us... booklets! We said we want to actually see an apartment, not a piece of paper, to which she replied "I am not sure I can show you anything, but in case I can, please give your federal photo IDs" Why carry a federal ID to a rental appointment' We left.
In short, they fixed this place up and now they are trying to make sure they get the "top residents" in there. Well, I work for VCU and have three degrees...

Stay away from this place.

Hmmm. I guess you haven't looked into too many apartments if you didn't know you needed to show a photo ID. Its called protection. Your agent is taking a stranger in a vacant apat (that can lock) so yes, they keep your ID until you get back from the apt. I understand about maybe not showing you THE apartment...it may not be ready, or someone may be living in it. Kinda weird that they couldnt show you a model apt.
You will need your photo ID to "tour" any property

Sounds like you are pretty hung up on your big bad self. Showing an ID to tour is not unusaual and it is acutally a safety issue. Also, I don't know what your 3 degrees have to do with anything except highlight the fact that you are a professional student who must be afraid to get a real job.
