If You Have Other Options, Don't Move Here

My husband and I moved here when we first moved to Virginia in 2006. We needed something quickly because we were starting new jobs. The first year was okay. We only saw a roach once and immediately the rental office called the exterminator and we never saw one again. If anything broke, it was repaired immediately. The staff was friendly and accommodating to our needs. So feeling confident, we renewed our lease and moved into a two bedroom apartment. This was around the time a new management company took over the place, and it has been hell ever since. We've been in our new place since May, and we have seen an endless parade of roaches, waterbugs, and spiders. I immediately called the office after the first day and got Jonathan(who I have yet to meet, the only one I had ever dealt with was Shameka who is very nice), and he told me snidely that they were "planning" on fumigating all of the buildings and they'd get to my building "when they got to it." So basically, "deal with the bugs until we decide to send the exterminator." The "tiled floors" in the bathroom and kitchen I was promised is basically a sheet of laminate on concrete, and badly applied, I might add. The whole place reeked of cat pee and cigarettes, and when we told the office that the carpets needed to be steam-cleaned to get the smell out, he (Jonathan AGAIN) told us they only steamed the carpets once a year and there was no exceptions. We ended up hiring and paying someone to do it. The final straw came with this big rainstorm that happened on Thursday. Our utility closet flooded badly(water was literally pouring out of the ceiling) and completely soaked the carpet in there, as well as half the carpet and in the closet of our second bedroom, destroying everything in the closet(thank God for renter's insurance) and making the whole place smell like mold. My husband is allergic to mold, so we immediately called the offices emergency line to let them know what happened. Friday morning I talked to Jonathan(notice a trend here') and he ONCE AGAIN gave me the rude brush off, telling me that that was the day they were fixing A/C units(mind you it was only mid 70s on Friday, cool compared to the high 90s we've had as of late) and I'd have to wait until they decided to come take a look. It didn't matter that my husband was suffering. Today is Tuesday and finally someone has come to take a look at the water damage, although God knows how long it will be until something is done about it.

Sorry this is so long-winded, but both my husband and I are so over this place. Ever since this new company took over the complex, it feels as if they could give two craps about the tenants anymore. With the exception of Shameka, the new staff is rude and obnoxious, and any types of repairs that need to be done are never done in a timely manner. Basically the new management gave us a lot of empty promises and have yet to be fufilled. At this point, the only good things I can say about this place is (A)it is convenient to shopping, highways and to the busline, (B) The rent is reasonable and (C) that they do work with you when your credit is so-so or you don't have a rental history(my husband and I both lived with our parents before we got married and moved). Then again, I don't know how that has changed since this new company took over. We don't want to break our lease because it will cost over $1000 to do that, so we're trying to stick it out, but we definitely not be renewing our lease next year. There are a lot of apartment complexes that are slightly more expensive, but are definitely nicer, in safer areas, and are just as convenient. And if you have never been late on your rent in your last apartment and have no criminal record, you have a great chance of getting approved. So shop around, they definitely get better than Rollingwood.
