I knew people who lived here in the early to mid 90s as well who loved it, so I felt fine moving in. However, as one person posted, if you are getting such a huge apt for so little money, there's a reason.
We get weekly police blotters on violent crime in the community. My neighbors blast music for much of the night while sitting on their porches drinking and laughing until all hours.
I have been in apt living for 15 years, and the office staff at St Johns is BY FAR the least intelligent and helpful of any I have encountered. Twice I had trouble nailing them down on something as clearcut as my rent amount. Its like they didn't want to tell me. I don't have a copy of my resigned lease despite repeated attempts to get it.
They asked me to extend my current lease for a year with the promise of keeping my same low rent, but when I went in to re-sign, the rent amount had gone up considerably. They then said they never promised the same amount. When I refused to sign (I still had 6 months left on my current lower amount lease), they threatened to raise my rent by $200 when my lease was up unless I re-signed right then. Very sketchy to say the least.
They threatened me with legal action AFTER I first moved in b/c they thought I hadn't paid the full deposit, when I had paid everything written as presented on the lease, and initialed by their office staff as having calculated and received my money. I ended up having to repay it as the weeks went by and they continued to harass me, even calling my work. They called it a 'mathematical error' but couldn't show me where the error came in on the lease. The entire thing escalated into a screaming match between the office manager and myself. I'd never been in a public screaming match before in my life.
Just things of that nature. If you like being totally hassled, guessing what your rent amount is, never getting leaky pipes fixed, living with lots of bugs and feeling like you're in the ghetto, then this is the right place for the right price. Otherwise, get out. Now that I can afford to move, I'm out as soon as my lease is up.
