Yo!

If you value your sanity, don't live here

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2007

I lived in Trolley Square West from 2003 to 2007...yeah, I lived in that place for four years, in two separate apartments. The first apartment was with the previous owner (Cornerstone REIT) and was mediocre at best - the main issues were noise (noise is a huge problem in this place especially when people party late at night), old appliances and carpeting. It was adequate for a college student. However, a pipe in the wall burst and my apartment flooded; after security refused to call maintenance, I called the fire department, who called in maintenance themselves. I saved most of my stuff and was moved to a new apartment on the third floor. I was never compensated for any damaged items.

That's when the trouble began. Colonial Properties moved in, and everything went down the toilet. The good maintenance workers (however few) were replaced by people who didn't care about their jobs, and the building staff spent more time talking about boyfriends than about my problems. The hallways are dank and the carpets aren't clean, and the place is as noisy as ever. The pool closed at some point and as far as I know it hasn't reopened - not like you'd want to go up there anyway with all the mold up there. There's a major mold problem, and you can see it in the carpets inside the apartments. The appliances are made by Roper and are not only small, but they are very old and in dire need of replacement. I'm surprised I didn't get sick trying to cook with these things. There was tons of dirt and debris left behind the stove, that they didn't bother cleaning out before I moved in.

The building's elevators rarely if ever work - in fact, I was told by maintenance that they planned to replace them in January 2007. They still have not been replaced, today in June 2008. There is very little parking; I had to park on the street, because parking permits are incredibly expensive (they might as well be made of gold). Laundry facilities are poor and machines are often broken. Security is nonexistent in a bad part of Richmond - the guards leave at 11 PM, and they often leave the door unlocked; even if it is locked, the basement door lock is broken, so anyone can just walk in through there. They also don't turn on the AC or heat until certain times of the year, even if it gets hot in April or cold in October - one time we had record cold in late April, and there was no heat, so they actually offered to compensate residents who wanted to stay in a hotel room due to the cold! I can at least say one of the few pluses of this place was the $20 luxury hotel room I got in the Radisson (now Doubletree) that evening.

If you enjoy living in noisy, dirty old slum apartments, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, stay away - there are MUCH better places in this area. The rent is far too high for what you actually get.
