I lived here for 2 1/2 years. I lived in a bottom apartment. Overall, this is just an OK place to live. What is great about this place is it's location. It is close to shopping, Fort Belvoir, and D.C. Maintenance is pretty good here. Pretty much all of my maint calls were handled promptly within 24 hours, and many times within just a few hours. Unfortunately, often either my heat, a/c or hot water would go out and I would have to call the emergency number. I felt bad for the maint guy because he lives an hour a way. He would always show up though and take care of the issue. Shopping is great - Giant nearby and walking distance to Whole Foods. The Whole Foods is great. Subway and Blockbuster nearby is cool as well. What I didn't care for: Cockroaches - not terrible, but over 2 years I probably saw and killed 10 - 15 cockroaches. This is the first and only place in my 45 years on this planet that I have ever lived and had this problem and I've lived in a number of different apartments in different cities. I'm guessing it's only inevitable with all the nearby grocery stores and food establishments. Quite distasteful nonetheless. They do spray, I commend them for that, but I'm just letting you know. I have heard of folks here who are very happy with amenities of their apartment. What I did not like was the bathroom was extremely outdated and disfunctional. The vanity looked like it had been there since the stone ages, and there were permanent stains in the sink area. The kitchen as well is somewhat outdated. Functional, but outdated. This wouldn't be such a bad thing, but for what WS charges, this should be an upgraded, modern facility. The appliances were ok, my fridge was pretty decent, the cheap counters and cabinets totally suck. There is nothing you can use, to get and keep the counters clean. The blinds through out the total apartment (at least mine anyways) were horrible. They were stained, brittle, impossible to clean and disfunctional. I believe they were the original from when the building was built which I believe was 1968. Noise is somewhat a problem here. If you are a lower tenant, you may be lucky or unlucky with whoever lives above you. Sometimes the people above are fairly quiet, I had one neighbor above who was quite noisy - you hear every footstep, TV, stereo, etc. The other thing is you have people who STOMP up and down stairs at all hours of night and some people who SLAM the heavy doors shut. Also if you are a lower tenant, upper tenants seem to enjoy throwing cigarrette butts on the ground outside your deck and also in the entrance area. And often times there will be teenagers smoking or hanging out in your entrance area, either talking on cell phones or smoking or just being a nuisance. I am quite certain that in the fall of 07 I was awakened at 2:50 a.m. by gunshots in the wooded area outside my apartment. Ten minutes later I witness the Fairfax county police search the area for 15 minutes. I could never get an answer either from WS management, nor Fairfax Co. Police what, if anything actually occurred, but I am positive they were gunshots and not fireworks. I truly am neither for or against these apartments. I don't see myself ever moving back in, I have found a personal residence to move into and am quite happier. Overall - I personally do not find WS worth the price that they charge with the exception that they do have a good location. I just think the apartment itself should be much nicer for the amount you will pay. Best of luck to you should you decide to live there.
