do not rent here unless you have to

I rented here as I had 1 week to move in somewhere. Since then I have been so busy that when I had the time to look for another place I didn't feel like it. I plan to either leave this metro area next year or buy. I have had it with this place and renting in general. I have stayed here 2 years. It has been one issue after another.
The management is incompetent. There is a LOT of turnover. One day it is a hateful short lady. The next day it is skinny I don't care about you lady. The next day it is a tatooed woman who would rather be smoking in a bar than talking to you (and you see her out on the steps with 5 guys smoking cigs). And then there is THE one nice lady that stayed all of 2 months before disappearing.
Go for a maintenance issue' Forget about it. I have come to the conclusion that they have a limited budget. If you catch them on their limited budget month/year then forget it. They have the response down: "We are only working on emergency maintenance issues right now. And we don't feel your request is an emergency." They gave me this crap when I needed my a/c turned on at the end of Spring. Well I opened the door in the kitchen and flipped the switch myself. Ridiculous.
The place has a ghetto feel. You walk in and the steps are TOTALLY FILTHY. The stairwells are disgusting and always have been. People just throw their junk mail down in the floor and it blows all over the place. Kids play in the stairwells and scary men loiter on the steps and in the stairwell. One time I went outside and some gang banger types were sitting on the trunks of their cars "hanging out."
Noise' I am VERY tolerant person when it comes to noise. But the floors are old wooden floors covered with carpet. They squeak and creak. All you have to do is stand up and you hear it--YOU hear your own floor even. If you are not on the top floor forget about having a nap, hearing the tv, or sleeping. Then there are the neighbors from ABSOLUTE HELL that moved in and fought for 2 months before they were evicted. If that is not enough there are some new immigrants to the US that think that the stairwell is more private of a place to have a cell phone conversation than their own apt. Given the doors are paper thin with cracks as big as my head around them you could have some juicey gossip if you understood their language.
Parking' It took them 2 years to realize that if you have 16 people living in one apt that you are not going to have enough spaces. They finally started assigning spaces. Well forget about having company over unless you sit out there and stake out a spot 2 days in advance. EVERY NIGHT the visitor spaces are taken. EVERY NIGHT the "extra" spots are taken. And if you have a larger than avg car forget about fitting your car easily into the teenie tiny spaces. And get prepared for dings in your car doors.
Safety' I must admit that I was concerned when I moved in. If I didn't have the 3 months trial deal I would not have even considered it. But I must say that there is no safety concern that I see. I mean I don't have kids. And if I did I wouldn't bring them here if I could help it. But I haven't had any feelings of uneasiness. My visitors have. There are several policemen who live in the complex so that might help.
Smells' Well given all the miniorities and new immigrants here you can expect non- traditional cooking. And you smell it ALL THE TIME. I ABSOLUTELY HATE CURRY. But I have to endure it on exit and entrance. AND somehow these odors creep into my apt. from time to time. It is disgusting. And this is my BIGGEST ISSUE.
Ventilation' Well lets just say that they need to clean the pipes out. I think I have developed allergies from the dust that is piped through the system. My SECOND BIGGEST ISSUE.
Insulation' None. It is cold as hell in the winter time but then again I think it is cold whenever it is below 75.

Your comment "Smells? Well given all the miniorities and new immigrants here you can expect non- traditional cooking." Honey, have I got news for you....I lived in NYC with Americans of eastern european descent and guess what, what they cooked smelled worse than what "minorities" cooked. Bad choice of words and thoughts on your part. Seems you are more racist than impartial. Cannot take what you say at heart since you have issues of classism and race on the mind....
