I'd think twice if it were free...

I have lived in several apartments, including barely habitable housing while in college. At least then I was getting what I paid for. I'm lucky to be writing this online, the proprietary internet service (there is no other option for cable internet) is down about every week; the company does prorate my bill, so I've only paid the full bill for the one month that I've been here without interrupted internet service.
The residents here were promised a car care center, it may still be in the promotional material. They had been promised that before we moved in and now our year lease is up so we're moving. If you ask the managment, "It's coming." It's been 'coming' for over a year and a half.
The apartment community lacks a serviceable design. My building has 12 apartments, each allowed two cars. We have six parking spaces and four garages (which flood every time it rains) if that gives an idea of the state of parking at Harbour Breeze. Again, "more is coming." A notice was just given to residents that everyone with a boat will need to find off-site storage so that boats are not taking up parking spaces.
Four months ago work was done on my buildings air conditioners. The patch of ground right in front of my patio was torn up and covered nicely by dirt when the work was finished. Can you guess' "The landscapers are coming." It would be a shame now to pay landscapers to do anything because it's about 75% grown over with grass on it's own.
My biggest problem is the circumstances surrounding our new neighbors. Great people who happen to smoke cigarettes inside their apartment. No problem, I don't go inside. But when second-hand cigarette smoke invades my apartment I have a problem. Our laundry room reeks of smoke. At first the apartment manager at Harbour Breeze told me that it was impossible for cigarette smoke to go from one apartment to the next. She didn't want to come over and find out for herself though. When a maintenance person finally came over the next week (for something else) he agreed that yes there was cigarette smoke in our apartment. Now the manager tells me that she just doesn't know what to do about it, but that I shouldn't feel that she was telling me I had to live with it. Well, since nothing has been done for six weeks (I can't even get her to call me with a status update, I have to keep hounding her.) I think that means I do have to live with it. (At least until we can move at the earliest possible convenience.)
Overall Harbour Breeze looks like a very welcoming and wonderful place to live. Don't be fooled, it's just a veneer. I was looking at some condos down the road as a place to move, but as soon as I found out that the same builder who had built Harbour Breeze had built those I turned around and left. Not interested. The apartments are small for the price, and the falsely advertised perks do not make up the difference.
"Harbour Breeze even offers full concierge services to take care of those pesky chores and day-to-day details (like dry cleaning pick up and delivery, feeding the cat, driving to the airport) that, face it, you could (easily!!!) live without." (copied from www.whereulive.com, the Harbour Breeze website, on 11/28/03) Conceirge service' Last time I had to go to the airport they told me that they would call the cab for me, that's it. And when I asked for someone to feed my dog and let him out twice a day over a three-day weekend, I was told the clubhouse staff doesn't have time for that.
I'm moving as soon as possible and will never rent or buy from any place built by these people, nor managed by Trammell Crow Residential Services.
