Not the Place You Want to Live

The rental office is not helpful. Staff are too busy with their personal calls to bother with you. If they do pause to see what you want, it?s with an exasperated "Hurry-up-and-say-what-you?ve-gotta-say" expression. Afterall, they have important personal CALLS to finish up!

When I first moved in, the laundry room key was just somehow not on the keyring with my other keys. They would get a new one made for me and leave it at my door. It never showed up. A few weeks later I called them, and they repeated their earlier promise. Months go by and I drop by the rental office. They?ll get one made for me (and leave it at my door). Finally when I call them they give me another number to call and say I?ll have to request a key from this person. This person didn?t know anything about any key, and suggested I call the rental office again. I gave up. A year after I moved in one of the maintenance people changing locks came by while I was at home, and mentioned that there was still a laundry room key on my apartment?s keyring. He asked if I?d like to have the little gem. (I DO like the maintenance staff.)

When I first got my dog I called them from work to tell them. They told me I needed to fill out a form, and they would put it on my door that very day. When I got home it wasn?t there. (I guess it was with the laundry room key'') I called again, and again they promised, to no avail. This process continued for a little more than two weeks. Then I just gave up. Hey, I tried to follow rules!

There is a 50% chance you will have to go outdoors and walk to the next building to do your laundry, because though there is ample space to put laundry facilities in every building, they have not. Laundry facilities are located in every OTHER building, from what I can tell, and yes, to do my laundry I must go to another building.

I?m pretty well able to ignore most of the bugs. I try to pretend I don?t see them. I?ve always been happy about the fact that the apartment?s extermination efforts do not require me to empty out every cabinet in the kitchen. (If you?ve never done that you have no idea how annoying and time consuming it is.) In the past it seems they do well at just leaving people alone -- one reason my upstairs neighbour actually likes the place.

Think twice before living here for that reason, however, because the new management is taking control and trying to fix up the place. I like the new manager and believe that she is truly doing her best to make the place live-able, but I?m not sure it can be done, and know I can?t stand living here until it is done.

Anything put on my patio is stolen within a couple of days. It doesn?t have to be something useful, like furniture (though even the heaviest and bulkiest of it "disappears" after only a couple of days.) I?ve had OFF! Outdoor Candles stolen off the patio in the middle of February! (not to mention a very heavy table with 4 chairs

The security guards seem a bit confused about their reason for being there. Apparently they think they are there to stand in huddles of 2 (or was it more') and talk to people driving through in the middle of 2-way traffic. They do this off of Cedar Lane, next to the next-door little stores parking lot. I?ve seen them there on various other occassions. The only other time I see them is when I come home after 11 and have to park far away from the apartment. Then they interrogate me as to why I?m there and where I?m going. I guess I?m likely to steal something on the way from my car to my apartment since I came home so late. Wish they would interrogate the people who won?t let me have ANYTHING on my patio!

Kids run amuck. Had I not been driving less than 5 mph (the parking lot speed is supposedly 10, but I?ve seen people drive fastere than that over the speed bumps -- incredibly large though they are), I would have killed one once as he darted on skates from behind another car (SUV) double-parked. The shock on his face that a car was actually driving through the parking lot -- can you imagine' A car driving through the parking lot'''

Younger ones just stare into my ground floor apartment whenever possible. OH! And they invite themselves into my apartment should I be forced to talk to one on my way inside. And in the summer they ask me for money for the icecream truck. I don?t mean to be uncharitible, but... I don?t like it.

Speaking of parking lots... BE VERY WARY of Patrick Street. You?ll notice many cars parked along side it have been in accidents, and have not been repaired. This isn?t for no reason. THEY DONT HAVE INSURANCE!! My husband?s car was it by one while driving along the street (they pulled out from their parking space into the side of his car). No insurance, no registration, and no driver?s license.

As a ground floor resident, I?ve experienced various plumbing problems. Last winter, I randomly had hot water. I learned to wash dishes and take showers when I found I had hot water. My life revolved around the hot water?s schedule. I?m not sure if this was because the people living directly above me had around 12 people in the apartment and they were using all the hot water, or if the plumbing just really sucked. I *think* that problem is fixed. So maybe it was just the plumbing, because I think the 12 people living above me continue to live there.

The sink has backed up twice recently. The first time it completely flooded the kitchen, destroying all electrical appliences I had in the cabinets under the sink. The second time I caught it before it got that far. (I don?t put electrical items down there anymore anyway. It?s hard though, cuz there really isn?t any other place to put them. The kitchen has no cabinet space.)

I can hear my upstairs neighbours. Sometimes they literally shake my ceiling fan as they drop those weights down or bowl or do whatever it is they do. I don?t really care though. Most of the time my husband and I just laugh in amazement.

In short though, I really really dislike the place. It has gotten a little better kid-wise and parking-wise with the new management, but I can?t keep waiting around for the rest to improve. I don?t recommend it unless not living there sentences you to 2 hour commutes each way for work. It?s just not worth it. You save a few dollars, but your insurance rates will make up for that, as you constantly are turning in accidents with uninsured people at-fault, car break-ins (yes, my husband?s car was broken into), theft claims, and renter?s insurance paying for the damage from the floods.

There is nothing special about the size, nor (as the rental office may try to convince you) the layout of the apartments. It?s just not worth it now. Maybe someday in the distant future'''

If you want to rent here, you call them, and there is no answer during office hours, it?s because they are taking a personal call or are just NOT THERE!

I feel very sad and angry about having lived here, and am moving shortly.
