I haven't moved in yet, but I only had a $150 deposit, a $50 application fee and a $80 fee to hold the apt. I spontaneously sent my boyfriend to go examine my future apt and take pictures (because I live out of town), and it was very clean and pretty. I did my research and asked tons of questions about the complex and about what they have done to improve fire safety. The staff has been quite helpful and they gave me satisfactory responses to all of my concerns. They didn't try to pull the wool over my eyes or sugar-coat things. My advice is to keep this in mind: Living in an apartment complex puts you at the mercy of the common sense of other residents. It also means you have to endure the presence of other people in close proximity. Accidents could happen anywhere...because an accident (by definition) means "not on purpose." Be smart and get renter's insurance. If you normally can't tolerate inconsiderate habits of other people, don't think you can be happy in a complex.
