Worse place I've ever lived

I don't even know where to begin! My husband and I were living in Pennsylvania when my husband got a job offer in Virginia beach so we decided to move down here. We came here, filled out applications, was approved, paid the security deposit, etc., all that was left was for us to move in. We were to get a 2nd floor apartment. My husband's job was set to start on July 1ST and we were told our apartment would be ready by then. Then mayfair kept calling and saying that the apartment won't be ready in time. This went on for 2 months. My husband's employer was understanding and said he would wait. Finally, they said we could move in on August 28th-almost 2 months after we were supposed to move in. We drove the uhaul the 10 hr trip from Pennsylvania to Virginia. We finally get here, and our apartment isn't ready! They say the only apartment available is the one below it on the first floor. We specifically asked for a second floor apartment for safety reasons. We accepted the apartment on the first floor because we didn't have anywhere to go. The very next night, we got robbed while we were there sleeping. The door and windows were locked, the robbers slid the window right past the lock. (The cop showed us how he did it.) We woke up to our refrigerator EMPTY, all pots and pans stolen, and over $2000 worth of cd's stolen. Also, my husband is a professional fisherman, and ALL of his fishing equipment was stolen. We complained to mayfair and said this would not have happened if we had gotten the second floor apartment like we were supposed to. They said it was OUR fault because we didn't have rentor's insurance. We had just moved in the day before! We ended up calling a lawyer and getting the 2nd floor apartment we were supposed to get. In addition to being robbed, we also had our car window shot out. There also was a man shot in the parking lot. I definitely think they need better lighting here. It is obviously not safe. There is a light outside our apartment that doesn't work. I keep calling the office to have it fixed and they always say it will be fixed, but it never is. It still does not work. My husband and I have been having financial difficulties lately and were having trouble coming up with the rent. We went to the office before the rent was due and explained our situation. They were no help whatsoever. They don't accept partial rent payments. We ended up being 2 months behind. We got the eviction notice and had 5 days to come up with $1600. We got the money and went to pay, but they wouldn't accept the check. It was a personal check and they said they would only accept a certified check or money order. Now, in all the time I have been living here, I have paid the rent with a personal check. They couldn't give me a reason why this time was different. We asked to speak with the manager and were told we weren't allowed! So we ended up getting a certified check and paying it without a problem. We haven't paid the rent yet for January. The rent is due by the 5th, and on the 6th (yesterday) we got the eviction notice. Now, isn't it weird that the last time we were 2 MONTHS LATE before getting an eviction notice, and this time we were ONE DAY LATE when we got an eviction notice' Another problem is the ants. Ants everywhere!-in the kitchen on the counters, in the bathroom on our toothbrushes, in my dresser drawers crawling on my clothes! We bug bomb once a month with 2 bug bombs, but the ants always come back. I called the office and got on the list for the exterminator, but he never showed up. For years, I have gotten on the list and he has never showed up. Then one day he was supposed to come and I saw him pull into the parking lot, sit in his truck for a few minutes, then drive away! I complained to the office, but they didn't do anything. Also, I agree with the other reviews about the gas bill. What crap! One of my neighbors here refused to pay his bill, was taken to court, lost, and was evicted. One time I came home and OUR APARTMENT DOOR WAS OPEN! Nothing was taken. I called the office and asked if maintenance had been in our apartment that day and they said yes. I told them he left the door open and all of our belongings could have been stolen. They didn't believe me! They said I had left my door open! Also, one time I came home and looked at the calls made that day and there was a call made while my husband and I were both at work and school. The call was also made to a place I had never heard of. The maintenance man is the only one who could have made the call. I called the office and complained, and they said I can't do anything about it because it is my word against theirs. The problems never end! My advice to everyone is to not live here! All the reviews speak for themselves! I don't think there is one good review for Mayfair. I would have moved out already if I had the money to do so.

Generally the thing they post on your door when you are late is just a notice alerting you to the fact that you are late, and not an eviction notice. I live at Mayfair, and I have no problems. The old managers were pretty bad, and the leasing girl that just left wasn't the greatest, but the manager there now is reasonable and she'll work with you when the law lets her. I've lived here since 2000 and I have no plans to leave.
