Rent Increased 28% in Two Years!

I have lived in Pembroke Square Apartments for the past 2.5 years. When I moved in, my rent was $640 per month which included all utilities except electricity (gas heat, gas hot water, gas stove included). When my lease renewed, the rent went up to $715 and the landlord (S.L. Nusbaum) decided to make tenants pay for gas, which cost another $150-200 per month. This past January, my rent increased again, this time to $820. That??s a 28% increase during a period when the cost of living increased 5%! Add in the cost of gas and huge electricity bills in the summer due to the leakage through the windows and sliding glass door, and the percentage increases to 32%! I chose to switch to a month-to-month lease in order to move in mid-year, and that decision has cost me another $100 per month. I now pay over $1,000 per month for the exact same apartment that cost me $640 just 28 months ago.
And during this time, S.L. Nusbaum has taken the attitude that all rents are going up for complexes that are close to Town Center, and they are just charging what the market will pay. They have added a coat of paint to the exterior of the building entrances and hung new signs proclaiming that these 40-year-old apartments are now ??Town Center Apartment Homes?? while doing nothing to enhance the quality of the apartments themselves. Nusbaum obviously thinks that the rental community is also stupid. The result is that an apartment complex that once had full occupancy and a 3-month waiting list now has dozens of empty units. If you must rent, please look elsewhere, and save your money and sanity.
